WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men #16 by Jonathan Hickman, Phil Noto, VC's Clayton Cowles, and Tom Muller, on sale now.

Since the conclusion of "X of Swords," the mutants of Krakoa have been waiting for the ultimate resolution of their apparent victory to take place. Once their sentient sister nation of Arakko has arrived on Earth, the two lands begin the process of physically reunifying into their previously singular form.

When this delicate procedure doesn't go as planned, Magneto and Xavier make a diplomatic trip to Arakko, a trip that leaves them both shocked not only by their reception, but by the sheer power of their new neighboring government in X-Men #16.

Cypher has done his best to act as a matchmaker between Krakoa and Arakko, but the two mutant islands don't seem interested in reconnecting after so many centuries apart. This doesn't just leave a geological tension between the two nations, but a political one as well. During their visit to the new neighboring state, Charles and Erik are told in no uncertain terms that they shouldn't come back with such optimistic ideas in mind by Arakko's own Isca the Unbeaten. Much like Xavier and Magneto, Isca has a seat at the highest level of Arakko's government, the Great Ring. She's also quick to point out that Krakoa's Quiet Council and the nation that Earth's mutants have made for themselves are both very much still in their infancies. To top it all off, the Great Ring of Arakko is not only fully seated where Krakoa's Quiet Council has open positions, but they're also entirely comprised of Omega-level mutants by precedent and design.

The term "Omega-Level" is one that refers to mutants whose abilities seemingly have no bounds.  The presence of Omega-Level mutants is nothing new to the Marvel Universe or the X-Men's corner of it, but the addition of so many of them belonging to a group that has already changed the course of mutant history just by existing is a startling development. That Arakko's leadership rests solely on the shoulders of such high power rivals only highlights the severity of the inconceivably delicate situation the X-Men find themselves in now.

The mutants of Krakoa didn't exactly emerge victorious in the Tournament of Swords by the means which either side of the duel believed a winner would be determined. Still, they came out on top, and so they've won their prize. Unfortunately, it has so far come with more burdens than anything else, and with a line in the sand having been drawn between the Quiet Council and the X-Men themselves as an organization, the added weight is resting on fewer shoulders than can reasonably manage it. Whatever light there is at the end of this particular tunnel for Earth's mutants couldn't possibly come into view soon enough.
