With the merger between Disney and 20th Century Fox still ongoing, the future of the latter's X-Men film franchise has been called into question on numerous occasions. One film in particular that has been the subject of several rumors is Fox's upcoming horror film The New Mutants.
The continued uncertainty surrounding The New Mutants has lead fans to wonder if the film would actually see the light of day, or if it would simply be canceled or shunted off to a streaming service like Hulu. Rumors have also been circulating that the film would be released, but as a direct-to-stream movie. Nevertheless, producer Lauren Shuler Donner remains optimistic that the next generation of mutants will make it to the big screen.
"I'm being told yes," Donner told CinemaBlend at today's TCA panel for Legion. "As I say, I took a step back, so that was under Simon [Kingerg]'s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea, we started off as more of a team kind of movie, and the decision came to make it more of a horror film. I think it's a good idea. I want to see it released. I'm hopeful that it will. I'd hate to see it thrown aside."
The New Mutants was originally slated to be released on April 13, 2018, before being pushed back to Feb. 22, 2019 and, finally, April 2, 2019. While the film is mostly done, the reshoots are ongoing, and the film has been in a state of limbo that prompted rumors about its cancellation or it being released through Hulu instead of theatrically.
On that note, it is worth mentioning that the mainline X-Men film Dark Phoenix has been the subject of very similar rumors over the past several months. However, that film still appears to be going ahead as planned. And based on Donner's comments, Fox is likely trying to make sure The New Mutants follows suit.
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot. The film is scheduled to be released on Aug. 2, 2019.
