Introduced in Marvel’s New Mutants, David Alleyne is part of the group of new mutants that were introduced before Marvel decided to wipe out all of the mutants except the ones who were the most marketable.

Despite this, the love writers have had for the character has allowed him to stick around even as many others were completely written off, allowing him to become a member of the X-Men and the Young Avengers. This love lasted long enough for him to get his powers restored and become a member of the new X-Factor, so let’s have a look at some things only the biggest fans know about Prodigy.

10 Lost his Powers

Unfortunately, the results of M-Day means the character had his powers taken away from him. Wanda’s “No More Mutants” resulted in millions of mutants being de-powered, and only a few hundred retaining their abilities. Without his powers, David was transformed into a regular human being, though he continued to work with the X-Men thanks to people going after mutants without powers.

9 Why He Can't Control His Powers

David’s powers allow him to mimic skill or mental knowledge from anyone he’s in close range to. This stretched to him learning new languages, fighting styles, and more. But this only lasts while he’s in close range, which turns out to be a mental block. Eventually, we’re shown what happens if this mental block is removed in the story “Too Much Information”, where David with his powers unlocked becomes a megalomaniac who attempts to conquer the world.

8 Young Avengers

David joined the Young Avengers very briefly in the Kieron Gillen era. After Speed was abducted, he began working with the group to try and find Patriot in the multiverse. During that time, he actually came out as bisexual after sharing a kiss with Hulkling. Of course, his feelings weren’t returned because Hulkling was in a relationship with Wiccan, but he still managed to remain close friends with the entire group.

7 Dating Speed

Most recently, we learned that while it didn’t quite work out with Hulkling, David’s been flirting with Speed.

The two of them began hanging out with Hulkling at a bar, only for Teddy to crack a joke that the two of them can’t get past knocking back a drink or two without making out. Though David isn’t proud of their drunken carousing, Tommy seems much more accepting, mentioning that it only happens occasionally.

6 Joins The X-Men

While Prodigy initially wanted nothing to do with becoming an X-Man, after learning what it was like to be a mutant, this gradually changed. He was invited to teach at the school at first, but the realization that the world saw him to be a mutant whether he had his powers or not changed him profoundly. By the time the X-Men are building Utopia just outside of San Francisco, Prodigy is working alongside Cyclops in the X-Men. He becomes a frontline soldier, putting his intelligence and fighting skills to use.

5 Avoided Being A Leader

After initially coming to Xavier’s mansion to learn how to use his powers, David was thrown together with a handful of other students in a group that everyone would later refer to as the “New Mutants”. David confesses to being annoyed by the idea of being placed in a squad with anyone, primarily because he believed it meant they were training him how to be an X-Man rather than how to use his powers. Eventually, though, he led his squad working alongside Surge while they developed their abilities.

4 Teacher At School

After M-Day, the Cuckoo Sisters decide to help David out by restoring all of the collected knowledge he’d absorbed over the time he’d been using his powers. He wouldn’t be able to learn anything else, but he’d be able to remember everything he’d forgotten. With that limitation undone, Prodigy suddenly had both the super-science and martial arts skills of some of the best X-Men. Because of that, he’s given the opportunity to work as a junior teacher as the X-Mansion.

3 Lost A Job To Scott Lang Somehow

Everyone needs a job. At one point after the X-Men weren’t exactly in the most powerful position, David wound up looking to become the head of security for Stark Industries.

He was up against a number of other people, including the Beetle, Victor Mancha, and Scott Lang. Unfortunately, he wasn’t quite able to pass every one of Stark’s security tests, and winds up losing the position to Ant-Man instead. Happens to the best of us.

2 Joins Cyclops

In the aftermath of the Schism event, most of the mutants decided to split up, half of them deciding to go back to school with Wolverine, and the other half remaining on Utopia. This was a big deal, as it involved taking sides and in some cases splitting up friendships. Prodigy chose to remain on Utopia, largely because he believed that no matter where they went, they would continue to have someone trying to attack them.

1 Regained His Powers

With the new wave of X-Men comics, Jonathan Hickman has successfully created a way for all of the mutants to have their powers restored. It comes by way of crucible: battling against Apocalypse, and being defeated. When they lose, every mutant dies and is reborn by the resurrection protocols, allowing them to regain their powers. Prodigy must have gone through these protocols, though we have no idea if he retains the same mental block he once had on his powers.
