Since coming to Krakoa, Nightcrawler's been contending with a lot of moral quandaries, especially in light of his decision to try and figure out what exactly a mutant religion could -- and should -- be. This also involves confronting Legion, the Omega-Level Mutant son of Charles Xavier, who's seemingly become a threat to Krakoa as the mysterious Patchwork Man. But on top of not being the threat the rest of the island believes him to be, Way of X #2 gives Legion a potential new vital role on the island as Nightcrawler's first true recruit -- and possible disciple.

All Nightcrawler had to do first was transcend his past morality and be willing to kill another living being, something the morally defined mutant initially had some trouble with.

Legion recruits the veteran hero to help rescue his mind from a mysterious device constructed by Orchis that's trying to use his brain as a testing ground for the possible eradication of society on Krakoa -- aided on by an invasive variant of Onslaught. Upon arriving with his allies, Nightcrawler and Pixie help end the corruption within Legion's mind but set off a possible discharge of energy that could wipe out all surrounding life. Nightcrawler ultimately elects to be the one to kill Legion to end his possible world-ending threat so he can be reborn thanks to the Five. Taking a gun from Doctor Nemesis and speaking with Legion about how they can decide who they are going forward, that this act is the key to allowing Legion's body -- and future -- to be restored.

If killing Legion can allow him to grow as a new person after being resurrected on Krakoa, Nightcrawler decides "there are sins worth sinning" and commits the mortal sin of murder. Doing so seems to seriously weigh on Kurt, and informs his views going forward. Soon after, Legion restores himself and promises to behave, despite Xavier's fears of what he could do if he goes rogue.

Beyond that, Legion seems to have decided to become Nightcrawler's partner going forward, revealing that he doesn't trust the scent of secrets he gets off of Xavier and Magneto. But that after seeing the inside of Nightcrawler's mind, he at least trusts that Nightcrawler wants to learn more about the world and is asking questions instead of pretending to know all the answers.

Legion vows to help Nightcrawler with the "hearts and minds" of Krakoa, giving Nightcrawler a powerful and potentially VERY dangerous partner going forward as he tries to build the mutant religion. With Legion's help and psionic abilities at his disposal, Nightcrawler might be able to truly help others through their inner pains and struggles. He could even be the key to soothing the often chaotic mind of Legion, helping him truly reach his potential. Of course, it also means Nightcrawler is dealing with one of Earth's most powerful mutants -- and potentially opening him up to accidentally give Mister Sinister one of his most sought-after pieces of mutant DNA. Legion could even be the perfect counter to the return of Onslaught, revealed to be the force targeting Krakoa to bring about the fall of their new society.

Having Legion as his first true disciple could be a huge step forward for Nightcrawler, especially with Doctor Nemesis and Pixie seemingly being more theoretical and practical helpers respectively. If Nightcrawler can even make Legion understand the way forward, then it could be the ultimate proof that his way is the true way forward for the mutant race. If even Legion can find redemption and purpose in this path, then anyone can, potentially further cementing Nightcrawler as the true heart of the X-Men going forward.
