When people think of the X-Men, they usually think of Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey, or some of the other more popular mutants. However, over the years the X-Men has built up a truly massive roster of mutants, with a wide variety of powers and personalities. Some of them have gotten places in the spotlight, but some have kind of just been there.

This is a tragedy, since many of these lesser known X-Men have the potential to be just as great as the more well known members of the group. Let's take a look at some of the most underrated X-Men of them all.

10 Warpath

Warpath was a long time member of X-Force before finally graduating up to the main team... and then immediately getting embroiled in some Shi'Ar hijinx. He would act as the muscle for his squad of X-Men, a job he would keep when he and several other members of the group returned to Earth.

From there, he would go on to join up with Wolverine's X-Force and since then has mostly been a background player in most X-Men stories, which is a tragedy. Warpath is a highly skilled young mutant and his powerful physical abilities would make him an asset to any team. On top of that, he's just a good character who deserves a bit more recognition.

9 Cannonball

Speaking of X-Force graduates to the X-Men, Cannonball was the first. Beginning his training as a member of the New Mutants, Cannonball would spend a lot of time leading X-Force after team founder Cable's departure and then join up with the X-Men when X-Force reconciled with the main team and started basing out of the X-Mansion.

Cannonball would prove just how good he was by singlehandedly defeating the leader of the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard Gladiator and helping the team out against Onslaught. He would go back and forth between the team and X-Force, even becoming an Avenger, one of only five X-Men to ever join Marvel's biggest team. Cannonball doesn't get enough credit for just how great a hero he really is.

8 Multiple Man

Multiple Man has been X-Men adjacent for most of his superheroic career, more known for his time in X-Factor than with the X-Men. His times in the X-Men itself have usually been either extremely short or during those all hands on deck times when they mostly use him and his dupes as cannon fodder.

This is a grave misuse of Multiple Man, as he's proven just how great he is as leader of X-Factor. Not only is his ability very useful both in battle and for spying, but he's developed into a skilled leader and detective. He's someone that could play multiple (ha ha) roles with the team.

7 Marrow

Marrow gets a really bad rap when it comes to her time in the X-Men. Looked at as one of the worst X-Men of all time, all most people see when they look at her is an edgy Wolverine wannabe. While there's definitely some truth to this, she was actually pretty well fleshed out during her time with the X-Men.

The writers at the time did their best to take what looked like a one note character and make her into something else- a damaged child with a terrible mutation using violence to hide her own problems. Unfortunately, after she left the X-Men, she was rebooted to her default setting. She was one of the most underrated X-Men of the late '90s and still is.

6 Chamber

Chamber was a Generation X graduate to the team. When his psi-powers manifested, they blew a hole in his torso, destroying his jaw and much of his chest. Now able to fire powerful psionic blasts, he learned to communicate telepathically. The problem, of course, is that the X-Men is full of all kind of psi talents and he kind of got lost in the shuffle.

Chamber's powers might not have distinguished him but he was a very interesting character and could have been used much better. His time in Generation X showed just how good a character he was and the fact he was so underused as an X-Man is a detriment to the character.

5 Dazzler

Marvel Comics' Dazzler

Dazzler is a disco throwback and that's probably the main reason she's so underrated. The ironic thing is that when she was introduced, disco was already mostly dead. She started out in her own series and then would join the X-Men, where she would get romantically involved with her teammate Longshot.

The last time Dazzler appeared it was as a faded pop star and that's perfect way to play her for the modern age. Her powers, the ability to turn sound into lasers, can be used in all kinds of situations and she has years of experience as a hero to draw upon. It wouldn't take too much work to make her into a grade-A X-Man.

4 Bishop

Bishop from the X-Men comics

Bishop was a big deal back when he debuted in the '90s, when mutants from dystopian futures coming back in time was all the rage. He carried big guns, had a cool costume, and a take no prisoners attitude that was all the rage during that time. After the '90s, though, he kind of fizzled out and hasn't done very much of note since, except going crazy and trying to kill Hope Summers.

Bishop had huge potential and it just kind of got squandered. Part of it is just how '90s he was but even when they shifted his character to something a bit more modern, they pushed him away from the X-Men and that was a mistake, as his solo outings never caught on like they should have. Lately, things have been better for the character, though, which is a good start.

3 Polaris

Polaris in X-Men Marvel comics

Magnetic mutants and the X-Men have a complicated history. Polaris has been a member of the team, on and off, since the late '60s but the problem is she's always been defined by her relationships with others- be it her boyfriend Havok, who she followed from team to team for years, or in more recent years her father, Magneto.

Polaris never really got too much to shine on her own, which is sad because she has huge potential. Her powers make her a force to be reckoned with and she has so much baggage to play with that she's basically subplot city and a great addition to any team she's on.

2 Jubilee

Jubilee surprised at her awn abilities in Marvel Comics.

Jubilee's powers aren't great. Let's get that out of the way right off the bat- her ability to shoot off fireworks is better than it gets credit for but it's not perfect and it took years for her to be able to develop it into an ability that can be used well in combat. However, a hero can be more than the sum of her powers and that's Jubilee in a nutshell.

Jubilee's life has been pretty much been continually in danger since she was very young. She has a ton of experience and spent years with the X-Men and Generation X, learning from some of the best mutant superheroes around. On top of all of that, she's just a fun character to spend time with.

1 Havok

Marvel Comics' Havok using his powers on the cover of Planet X.

Havok has been in the shadow of his brother Cyclops for his entire superheroic career and that's a bit of a travesty. Havok has always had the chance to be a great character on his own, as proven by his stints leading X-Factor, the X-Men, and the Uncanny Avengers, but for too many fans, he's just Scott's younger brother.

Every few years, Havok gets trotted out and then put back away and that's unfair to such a great character. Most of the time it feels like no one knows what to do with him long term but there's so much that can be done to distinguish him from his brother and live up to his potential.
