X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn is ready to return to the franchise -- but only if he can take a crack at a new Logan.

At a press event attended by ComicBook.com and other outlets, Vaughn was asked if there was one mutant he'd love a shot at rebooting when the characters arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And unsurprisingly, he chose one of the biggest characters he didn't get a chance to explore in First Class.

"There's only one that I didn't get to play with properly and I would have loved to... Hugh Jackman was so good and did such a good job doing it. But to cast the young [Wolverine], the reboot, that would be fun, I think, and it could go into such a different direction where Hugh took it as well," Vaughn said. "I think Hugh knocked it out of the park but I think out of [all of the X-Men] that's the character that weirdly, I don't know why I get drawn to. Yeah, Wolverine."

Though Jackman had a brief cameo in First Class, Wolverine has yet to be rebooted like many of the other mutants were for the new iteration of the team. Of course, it's assumed that all of the characters, this time including Wolverine, will be recast and rebooted when they finally arrive in the MCU. And if Vaughn had a chance to bring a new actor on board, he's already got some names he thinks would be perfect.

"Well, he's got older now, but I would say Tom Hardy would have... been awesome," Vaughn added. "I think Taron [Egerton] could do it in his sleep. Aaron Taylor-Johnson could do it as well. I mean, I think Aaron or Taron would be my first two choices. [They] could do it really well."

Vaughn is right that Hardy is likely too old to play a younger take on the character that could last through multiple films. And he also technically plays a character in the MCU already since the Venom franchise seems to exist in the multiverse. Taylor-Johnson will also soon play Kraven the Hunter for Sony. And of course, he previously played Quicksilver. But Egerton could be a good fit given his age and growing acclaim.

After generating buzz for directing Kick Ass, Vaughn was chosen to helm First Class, the 2011 reboot which saw the X-Men franchise head back to the '60s with new actors. Since then, however, he's only directed Kingsman movies, helming the two originals -- starring Egerton -- and this year's prequel, The King's Man.

The King's Man is now in theaters.
