It's no secret that Marvel's Avengers has been a hit or miss for many fans. Its bugs and dodgy release schedule have left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. However, on the other side of the spectrum, the game puts many of its heroes into a new light, and the game offers pretty fun gameplay that captures the essence of each character. It also has one particular similarity to other Marvel franchises like the MCU. Fans want more ties to the larger universe.

Players have been clamoring for more characters and stories even with the announcement of the Hawkeye DLC. However, the game sets up a fascinating idea that would depart from Earth's Mightiest Heroes entirely. Using the same gameplay and live-service style, the format could serve the X-Men far more than the Avengers. Considering the comics' current iteration, an X-Men title set on and around Krakoa makes for the perfect setting of a game.

Its story could center on the X-Men securing their status with the rest of the world as a nation and place them on missions native to the team. Locations like Madripoor or the Savage Land. Enemies could be more varied as well, with foes ranging from Sentinels to the Brood. Their alternate futures even provide the perfect fodder for more stories and new worlds in future DLC.

Marvel's Avengers features a varied and in-depth system to grow heroes' abilities and change out their gear. The same system could be applied to an X-Men title, but its execution would be set within the lore. Mutants have always consistently experienced power evolutions. The upgrades players get from skill points could be viewed in the same respect. Players would be able to watch their characters evolve and gain new abilities. Gear could be considered specialized mutations to combat whatever modifiers are located on different levels.

Dawn of X

Gameplay for a title of this magnitude would have a heavy focus on powers and how they can be used in a team setting. More so than the Avengers, the X-Men's powers vary in what they are and how they are used. Characters like Colossus and Kitty Pryde would need to utilize fighting styles similar to the Hulk or Black Widow. However, their powers could evolve in different ways that could turn a close-quarter fighter into a ranged one or vice-versa. Thus adding even more variety into the mix.

Something that Marvel's Avengers has only touched on but could be used more in Marvel's X-Men could be the application of team-up moves. Right now, players can utilize Iron Man's repulsors to reflect off of Cap's shield. However, X-Men could make team-ups a dedicated mechanic for players to experience iconic moves like the fastball special. It would be a small addition but adds countless more hours of multiplayer fun.

Cosmetic wise there are countless suits that players would be able to choose from in the game. With decades of lore to sift through, building the best-looking team would be a side mission all on its own. Ultimately, Marvel's Avengers shows a sliver of promise for the future of superhero games. Live service titles may not be perfect yet, but they have the potential to grow into something truly memorable. Marvel's X-Men could be the game that kickstarts that trend and gives the mutants a game they deserve.
