A good supervillain needs a good supervillain lair. Sometimes, that lair is out in the open for the world to see, like Doctor Doom's Doom Castle in Latveria, while other big bads like to keep the location of their homes secret, like the Injustice League's Hall of Doom in Slaughter Swamp. But some villains, the really egotistical ones, don't just want people to know where their base is, they want the whole world to see it.

For Mutant Master of Magnetism known as Magneto, that base was Asteroid M. Magneto's base orbited the Earth, passing over every country every few hours, letting the everyday humans know that above them was a man who could wipe them out, if only the X-Men would let him. And like all things in comics, the mythology of Asteroid M is filled with fun tidbits.

10 There Are Many Asteroid Ms

Since it first debuted in 1964's X-Men #5, there have been five Asteroid M's, and not all of them were created by Magneto. The numerous Asteroid Ms have been used not only as the base of operations for Charles Xavier's oldest friend turned rival, but they have also been used by the Brotherhood of Mutants, mutants looking for a safe place to live, and even the X-Men themselves.

Magneto built the original Asteroid M shortly after reconnecting with his children, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as a place where the reunited family could be free from the eyes of homo sapiens.

While Magneto may have built the first Asteroid M as a home for his children, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver didn't know that. At the time, they didn't even know Magneto was their father. What the siblings did know was that they weren't keen on being part of the Brotherhood of Mutants but they were indebted to Magneto, who saved them from a riotous mob in Europe.

When the X-Men arrived on Asteroid M to battle the Brotherhood, Magneto was ready and had a plan that would kill the teen heroes with the press of a button. Unable to tolerate the murder of others, Scarlet Witch used her powers to destroy Magneto's weapon, giving the X-Men a chance to win the day. In the ensuing battle, Asteroid M broke apart and fell into the ocean.

8 Asteroid M's Ruins Became A Mutant Nation

While the pieces of the first Asteroid M would spend years under the ocean, they would not stay there forever. After being chased out of their San Francisco home by the Dark Avengers, the X-Men searched for a new place to stay. Cyclops and the team chose to raise the remains of Asteroid M from the ocean depths and rename it Utopia.

The X-Men saw Utopia not as a base of operations, but as a haven for mutants who needed to get away from humans. Utopia was to be a new mutant nation, but things soon fell apart when the Phoenix Five came into being and turned Utopia into a dystopia.

7 Warlock Accidentally Blew Up The Second Asteroid M

Bored with his Antarctic Citadel, Magneto decided to build a second Asteroid M. This second base was larger than the first, but just as prone to blowing up. When the techno-organic alien Warlock fled his overly strict homeworld for Earth, his course took him right through Asteroid M, which exploded when he slammed into it.

When pieces of the second Asteroid M fell out of orbit and landed on Earth, Magneto began searching for them. His journey took him to Kampuchea where he created an international incident.

6 Scarlet Witch Found Sanctuary In The Third Asteroid M

When Magneto joined the Hellfire Club, he stayed at one of their many homes, but he still wanted a place all his own, so he built a third Asteroid M. This new Asteroid M also included improvements on the previous two, including inhibitor fields that would keep any mutants or superhumans from being able to use their powers on the base and (of course) a swimming pool.

When Scarlet Witch learned that her children were actually figments of her imagination brought to life through her powers, the Avenger lost her mind and began to attack her teammates. Magneto, looking to keep his daughter safe, brought her to the new Asteroid M.

5 Everything In Asteroid M Has Metal In It

Being the Master of Magnetism, Magneto does his best to work metal into everything he makes. Quicksilver learned this when he tried to use some plastic tubing on the third Asteroid M to bind his father. Magneto played along with his son's plan for a little bit, but soon enough, Magneto removed the plastic with his powers.

Magneto had added traces of metal to the plastic so that - if the need should arise - he could control the tubes with his power. Quicksilver was ready for anything, though, and pulled out a shrunken Lockjaw from his pocket who then teleported the speedster, his father, and Scarlet Witch to the headquarters of the West Coast Avengers.

4 Magneto's Retirement In The Third Asteroid M Was Interrupted By His Fans

For a time, Magneto retired from the supervillain life and lived quietly on the third Asteroid M. When the Acolytes (a group of mutants who tried to live by Magneto's teachings) stole a rocket and headed to space, they asked their idol if they could take sanctuary in Asteroid M. Magneto, who liked the idea of having worshipers, let them stay.

What Magento didn't know was that one Acolyte, Fabian Cortez, was actually part of a group called the Upstarts, which was put together by the Gamesmaster. Each member was awarded points for killing high profile mutants, and Fabian planned to kill Magneto.

3 From Destruction Comes Avalon!

After the third Asteroid M was destroyed by the mutant terrorist Fabian Cortez, Magento took the parts he was able to salvage and combined them with some Shi'ar technology he stole and Cable's own space station Graymalkin to create Avalon. Magneto sent out his servant Exodus to bring the Acolytes to his new home.

Fearing the worst, Professor X sent the X-Men to Avalon to take down Magneto and destroy his space station. In the ensuing battle, Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's bones, nearly killing him. Left with no choice, Xavier absorbed Magneto's mind into his own, leaving the evil mutant in a vegetative state.

2 Xorn Made The Fourth Asteroid M

Xorn Frank Quitely

The fourth version of Asteroid M was built not by Magneto but by Xorn, a mutant who thought he was Magneto. Xorn blew up the X-Jet Wolverine and Jean Grey used to reach Asteroid M, trapping them on the station, and set it on a course with the sun.

With no hope of being saved and facing an agonizing death by solar fire, Wolverine chose to kill Jean rather than allow her to suffer. Jean's death awakened the Phoenix Force inside her, which saved her and Wolverine from being consumed by the sun along with Asteroid M.

1 The Fifth Asteroid M Is A Mothervine Sanctuary

Magneto's Brotherhood

Originally created in the Ultimate Universe, Mothervine was a genetic enhancement that could ensure a child would be born with mutant powers. Mothervine made its way to the 616 universe during the Incursion Event. When Mothervine bombs were set off in a number of cities, hundreds of new mutants were created.

Magneto used this moment to build a new Asteroid M and make it a sanctuary for these new mutants, building a new and larger Brotherhood of Mutants. This latest Asteroid M is still orbiting the Earth, though it isn't being used by anyone at the moment.
