The ongoing Trial of Magneto has put the master of magnetism in the hot seat for the alleged murder of his adopted daughter, the Avengers' Scarlet Witch. Whether he's guilty or not, Magneto already has some experience with killing his progeny having once murdered his "daughter" Zaladane in cold blood.

After his murderous ways were supposedly rehabilitated, Uncanny X-Men #275 (by Chris Claremont, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Karl Alstaetter, Glynis Oliver and Joe Rosas) saw Magneto return to his ways as a remorseless killer in one fell swoop.

Magneto Tortured

Created by Gerry Conway and Barry Windsor-Smith, Zaladane debuted in Astonishing Tales #3. Zaladane, calling herself "Zala Dane," proclaimed that she was the half-sister of Lorna Dane, the mutant Polaris. When she learned that Polaris was granted mutant powers but she had none, Zaladane traveled the world in search of way to obtain her own superpowers. Her journey eventually led her to the Savage Land, where she became the high priestess of the Sun People. As their leader, Zaladane learned how to wield primitive forms of magic but was eventually defeated by Garrok and Ka-Zar. Years later, Zaladane allied herself with the High Evolutionary and used his technology to gain magnetic powers similar to Polaris's. Zaladane further copied her half-sister by stealing her magnetic abilities, which eventually led to the manifestation of Polaris's secondary mutation. Using the stolen powers, Zaladane took over the Savage Land.

Magneto partnered with Ka-Zar, Rogue, and Nick Fury and invaded the Savage Lands to confront Zaladane. After being shot down by a Russian soldier, Magneto was captured by Zaladane and her army. Using the same technology she used to steal Polaris's powers, she took Magneto's magnetic abilities as well, peering into his most intimate memories in the process. She saw how he screamed until his voice gave out when he saw his daughter Anya burned to death in front of him and the pain he felt he felt when his wife Isabelle's throat was cut by the people he trusted. In the meantime, Rogue, Fury and Ka-Zar worked their way through the Savage Land until they reached Zaladane's castle. Rogue freed Magneto and he was able to reverse the transfer of power thereby regaining his mutant abilities.

Magneto Kills Zala Dane

With his powers restored, the enraged Magneto tore his way through Zaladane's army before setting his sights on the woman who stole his daughter's powers. Rogue pleaded with Magneto to not kill her but Magneto had already made up his mind. The Master of Magnetism then reversed the blood flow in Zaladane's body, killing her in cold blood. Prior to this, Magneto was believed to have been rehabilitated by the X-Men, but this act presented questions as to his true convictions. He then stated that he would never be like Charles Xavier and that he was a fool to attempt to emulate him.

Magneto has always been one of the X-Men's darkest villains, steadfast in his belief that mutantkind must be protected at all costs. He turned over a new leaf when he joined the X-Men and helped found Krakoa, but the Trial of Magneto might indicate that he has fallen back into his old ways and murdered another one of his "daughters."
