The following contains spoilers from X-Men #20, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Over the decades, the world of the X-Men has featured countless outlandish and exciting stories. From traveling to space to exploring alternate futures, there's never a shortage of surprises for Marvel's merry Mutants. But one of the most endearing and entertaining qualities of the X-Men has been the moments of fun found in the team, whether in interests or personality. But one of the best examples of this was shown in X-Men #20 (by Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli, Federico Blee, and VC's Clayton Cowles) when Magik showed she was one of Michael Jackson's biggest fans.

In the recent arc of X-Men, The Brood has begun to act out of line, attacking and infecting innocents. However, this shouldn't have been the case as their new ruler was the benevolent Broo. Through Broo, a truce was forged as he could control the hive mind with little strain on his part. But to be sure, Jean Grey and Magik went to check on him, only to find that when conscious he was very much in control. To prove it, he had his Broodlings dance the dance from Michael Jackson's Thriller, igniting Illyana Rasputin's love of the musician. That said, this funny moment has its own history tied to a classic X-Men miniseries.

Magik Has Always Been A Fan of Michael Jackson

When Xavier's original team of X-Men were no longer students, it gave way for the New Mutants, a team that would include Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik. Her childhood was filled with challenges as a captive in the world of Limbo, which spawned her notoriously dark humor and sarcastic wit but also made her a hero. That said, being a child, she wasn't above light-hearted fun and this was best shown in the chaotic miniseries Nightcrawler by Dave Cockrum from 1985. In the series, Nightcrawler was transported to a fantasy-like alien dimension from the Danger Room with Kitty Pryde and Magik watching.

Throughout the chaos of the series, Kitty and Illyana did their best to save Nightcrawler, and all the while the brooding heroine was shown wearing a Michael Jackson shirt, rather than a uniform. At this point, Jackson's music was everywhere as he was an icon of pop with countless hits found on each album. As a result, it's no surprise that at least one of Xavier's students was a fan. Nevertheless, the fact that Magik is one of them perfectly captured the complexity of her character even decades after the Nightcrawler series.

Magik's Interest Gives Her Character More Depth

Magik and Brood in the X-Men series

Magik may not be the most fun-loving Mutant on Krakoa, but that never meant she didn't have style or taste when it came to entertaining herself. Seeing her excitement in watching The Brood dance to Thriller, then following along, perfectly showed just how out of the ordinary Magik is. Sure, The Brood is dangerous but if they're having a good time, Illyana would be the first to join in. But the reason for this adds to her history and the personal lessons she's followed ever since.

Magik lived a life where tomorrow was never promised. As a result, she had to find the light in the world whenever she could as she never knew when it would come again. That said, seeing her dance when a Brood crisis was unfolding was perfect for capturing everything about Magik. Dancing in a fire is exactly the type of personality that's quintessentially Magik and by reigniting her love of Michael Jackson, it also proved that even the smallest Easter egg can further enhance a character.
