The following contains spoilers for New Mutants #40, now on sale from Marvel Comics

Deadpool's relationship with the X-Men has been a point of controversy in modern stories, with the mutant nation of Krakoa initially resisting the wildcard anti-hero's attempts to join them. However, recently, things have changed, and he's found acceptance -- but not by everyone on the island.

The Deadpool-centric story from New Mutants #40 (by Alyssa Wong, Geoff Shaw, and Nolan Woodard) reveals Magik has made it her mission to keep Deadpool off Krakoa -- and she has the power and status to follow through on that. But in doing so, she may have further complicated X-Men/X-Force relations and set up Deadpool's upcoming series at the same time.

Deadpool has always had a complicated bond with the X-Men. Debuting as an enemy of X-Force and deriving his abilities from the same shadowy cabals that manipulated Wolverine, the Merc with a Mouth has become the ultimate frenemy of the mutant community. He's solidified that connection recently, working with Wolverine enough to finally earn acceptance on Krakoa and a place in X-Force. This means Deadpool can visit the island freely. But while some members of the mutant nation have come to accept Deadpool's place among them, that isn't the case for everyone.

In the story featured at the end of the issue, the mercenary spends time on a beach in Krakoa hanging out with Scout and her friends. Wade encourages the group to outthink one another as part of his "Kid Fight Club," promising to teach the victor some deadly new techniques. This prompts a furious Magik to confront Deadpool over spending time with her students. Even though Scout had specifically asked him to hang out with them, the original New Mutants decide to force Deadpool off the island. Although Deadpool is a member of X-Force and allowed on the mutant nation, Magik promises to kick him off the island whenever she sees him there.

This could complicate Deadpool's future with the X-Men in a number of ways, and could even spell chaos for the entire nation. Deadpool's tenure on X-Force hasn't been totally positive. While he's not Beast's favorite member, he'll likely be frustrated by an X-Man and War Captain like Magik interfering with his operations -- escalating the already tense relationship between X-Force and the rest of the Krakoa government structure. Magik's actions might come back to haunt her, as it could leave some students like Scout frustrated, with redemption not being offered to Deadpool despite his multiple heroic acts. Coming right off the heels of Magik's defense of new Queen Madelyne Pryor, it's another example of the X-Men being hypocritical.

On top of making things more complicated for the X-Men and their allies on Krakoa, Magik's proclamation also seems to be setting up a possible new story arc for Deadpool. Solicitations for his new series have teased him being offered a place in a John Wick-style cabal of assassins. While he may have been more hesitant to take on that opportunity if he was fully embraced by the X-Men's nation, he's now more available to focus on this potential windfall. In the process, Deadpool's attention will likely be split, and he'll be less of an asset for Krakoa. Given the importance of X-Force's typical missions, this could be a serious problem for Krakoa's national defense, and further divide the Marvel Universe -- while setting up an explosive new path for Deadpool.
