Since Professor X and his allies turned the island Krakoa into a homeland for mutantkind, the X-Men have perfected the ultimate way to fight back against their enemies, using the abilities of five young mutants in concert to perfect a resurrection for any and all mutants who've been brought down.

While this process has been used to resurrect many long-dead mutants, it has opened up a number of them to be more willing to throw themselves into deadly conflict, with some even dying repeatedly. Now, we're taking a closer look at some of many of the X-Men and their allies who've been killed across the course of the "Dawn of X" era and how they were revived.

HOUSE OF X

House of X Resurrections

The Five were first introduced over the course of House of X by Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz, and as the only way that a core group of X-Men could come back from a suicide mission into space to stop the construction of a new Master Mold that would create Nimrod. Arriving at the Dyson Solar Observatory just above the Sun, a Blackbird containing a team of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Archangel, Nightcrawler, Husk, M and Mystique were shot down mid-approach. Although the ship reaches the station, Husk and Archangel are killed in the landing. Continuing the mission despite these early losses, the group is able to do serious damage to Master Mold, albeit at a great personal cost.

M is killed holding the line to give Jean Grey a chance to escape and maintain telepathic communication during the mission. Three of the hooks keeping the Master Mold above the sun are disabled, but Mystique is blasted into space before she can disengage the final one. With no other options, Wolverine and Nightcrawler sacrifice their lives to take down the last one, teleporting outside the station and burning up in the sun's intense heat. With their mission complete, Cyclops is cornered and shot down by the remaining humans on the station, and Jean Grey is killed when her escape pod is destroyed. These are the first mutants who are seen dying and being revived by the Five, giving the X-Men as a whole the ability to come back after death.

ASSORTED DEATHS

Since then, multiple other mutants have been targeted and killed at various points, only to be restored thanks to the powers of the Five. Aurora was killed by a human while off Krakoa, with the investigation into her mysterious demise becoming the impetus for Northstar and Polaris to form a new X-Factor organization. Empath, a member of the Hellions who enjoys messing with his teammates, ends up with a bullet in his brain from an annoyed Greycrow, something the group more or less expected. Cecilia Reyes was killed in a recent attack on Krakoa in X-Force, requiring her own restoration. Toad was similarly killed during the Cotati assault of the island in X-Men: Empyre.

In Marauders, the death of Kate Pryde was initially met with great mystery and tragedy, as for some reason she didn't appear to be able to be restored like other mutants. Fearing it was her powers acting against Krakoa, many in the X-Men worried that she'd never be able to be reborn. But when Emma realized it was just her phasing powers responding to resurrection in an unlikely way, she's able to help the Five complete the process and help Kate Pryde finally come back. Charles Xavier himself was assassinated early into the formation of Krakoa by the cabal of murderous humans XENO, with his own resurrection being a major show of power to the world. Even Apocalypse briedly died, sacrificing his immense power so it could be absorbed and rechanneled by Rogue to assist Excalibur.

MULTIPLE DEATHS

X-Force Terra Verde

There are some mutants who've had to go through the resurrection process multiple times, despite the relative newness of the concept in Krakoa. Jean Grey was killed not long after her first restoration when Wolverine was mind-controlled and unleashed against his teammates on X-Force. She died alongside another frequent memberof X-Force, Domino. Dominio also allowed herself to die on a separate mission after a particularly traumatic series of torturous events, wiping her recent memories of the event clear. Despite his incredible healing factor, Wolverine has had to be restored enough that the X-Men have even solidified a way to also restore his adamantium skeleton after any successful restoration.

However, the most common death person to die has been Quinten Quire. Despite his Omega-Level telepathic powers, Quire has been caught by surprise and killed multiple times already across "Dawn of X." He's been beheaded, had his body turned into fuel for the telefloronic plant-people of Terra Verde and run through by the Cerebro Sword. His most recent body ended up in Russia in the hands of Mikhail Rasputin and Xion, giving the enemies of Krakoa a potential Omega-level advantage to start cloning and splicing into their soldiers.
