WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Cable #1 by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

While the newly created mutant nation-state of Krakoa has provided the Marvel Universe's mutant population with a utopian safe haven and appeared like paradise on Earth, the thriving society has a surprising dark side. In addition to all ex-mutants undergoing a rite that involves death by ritual combat and being reborn through the island's resurrection protocols, Cable #1 reveals that the mutants kick back with a regular gladiatorial contest who two mutants engage in all-out duels in a location on Krakoa known as the Quarry.

Losers owe victors a favor known as "markers," and the opening issue of Cable pitting the young incarnation of Nate Summers against Wolverine. After Kid Cable emerges victorious, the win-loss record for the participants in the Quarry is shown on a data page. From interesting factoids including that Magik was disqualified from a match for unspecified reasons and that the teleporters Nightcrawler and Blink fought to a draw, the Quarry revealed that one fan-favorite mutant hero with an unmatched win-loss record: Callisto.

Callisto Gorgon X-Men Quarry

Callisto has won all three of her matches in the Quarry, which more than any other combatant in Krakoa's gladiatorial games. While this impressive undefeated record may be a bit surprising in comparison to some of Krakoa's more iconic residents, it is well within the history of her character as the former leader of the Morlocks, given Callisto's pre-Dawn of X background. To earn the right to lead the mutants who lived in the sewers of New York City, Callisto had numerous one-on-one fights with would-be challengers.

After the Morlocks started kidnapping surface dwellers to force them to live among them in the sewers, the X-Men venture underground where Storm challenges Callisto to a duel for the leadership of the Morlocks in Chris Claremont and Paul Smith's Uncanny X-Men #170. After a bitter battle, Storm emerged victorious and took command of the community, while Callisto swore revenge.

After floating around the periphery of the X-Men's world for years, Callisto lost her mutant powers due to Decimation following House of M. Although it's not entirely clear how or if she ever got her powers back, she was still welcomed into Krakoa and began working closely with Emma Frost as the White Knight of the Hellfire Trading Company in Marauders.

Marauders Callisto

Even without her mutant powers, Callisto's rough upbringing forged her into a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. And despite her finding a new niche among the mutants of Krakoa, Callisto remains as competitive as ever, evident by her frequent activity as a combatant within the Quarry and undefeated streak. Even when she's not in the fighting ring, Callisto keenly observes other competitors, likely scoping out potential rivals as she makes bets from the sidelines with fellow Krakoan warriors like Gorgon. And while Callisto may have underestimated Cable's chances against Wolverine, she is unlikely to make the same mistake again.

While the mutant population of Krakoa prides itself on being more enlightened and civilized than the outside world, the truth is that violence is deeply woven into the culture. And few among the population of the mutant nation-state have more experience in gladiatorial combat than Callisto. While it is unclear if Callisto is still holding onto any old Morlock rivalries in the mutant paradise, Callisto has certainly had an outlet between her activities alongside the Marauders in combat within the Quarry. And when Callisto inevitably meets her match in the arena, she is sure to hold a deep grudge against the one that finally breaks her impressive winning streak.
