With Marvel announcing that Kitty Pryde and Colossus will be getting married in June's X-Men Gold #30, there has been a lot of talk about how great the relationship is between the two of them and, obviously, there have been plenty of awesome moments between the two heroes over the years (especially during Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men run) but the origins of their relationship remain more than a little bit on the creepy side due to just how young Kitty Pryde was when she and Colossus first began to date.

Colossus and Kitty Pryde met each other for the first time in X-Men #129 (by John Byrne, Chris Claremont and Terry Austin), when the X-Men were looking to recruit Kitty to come to school at Xavier's School instead of Emma Frost's Massachusetts Academy. In this issue, Kitty is explained to be 13 and a half years old...

That is pretty darn young. Colossus' age was not given at this point in time, but he's obviously at least 18 years old and likely already 19 years old (we'll explain why later).

In X-Men #131, Colossus saves the X-Men and he clearly makes an impression upon Kitty...

Kitty then takes a major backseat during the rest of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," so there's really not that much to talk about between the two until a famous storyline dramatically changed their relationship forever. That storyline was "Days of Future Past," which began in X-Men #141, where we see Kitty and Peter alive in the future and, sure enough, they are marred in the future...

Once you establish that they are married in the future, then obviously you're going to start looking at things with an eye towards them ultimately ending up with each other. That makes otherwise innocuous moments like later in the issue stand out...

Still, due to her age, Byrne and Claremont continued to play their relationship more of a crush by Kitty and an embarrassed older guy dealing with the crush by the younger girl, like when she kissed Colossus under the mistletoe in Uncanny X-Men #143...

or jumped on him later in the issue...

Byrne's blushing Colossus is adorable.

In any event, even as Byrne left the series, the Kitty/Colossus relationship continued to be mostly a case of Kitty having a crush on the older teammate and her other teammates teasing her about it, like in this bit from Uncanny X-Men #149 (by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and Joe Rubinstein)...

Things changed on the X-Men's long mission into space in the #160s where they were all nearly killed by being infected by Brood eggs. There was a real sense of dread on their mission and Kitty tried to distract herself by effectively throwing herself on Colossus. The two shared their first kiss...

Kitty turned 14 on this mission and it is weird how 14 was somehow treated as if it was an okay age to take things to the next level.

When they returned to Earth, Kitty got her 14th birthday party in X-Men: Special Edition #1 (by Claremont and Cockrum) and we finally got a firm bead on Colossus' age, as the issue specifically notes that Kitty is now 14 and Colossus is now 19.

Now, do note that we are not saying that there has never been a case of a 19-year-old dating a 14-year-old out there. Of course there are examples of that happening. However, "I've seen 19-year-olds date 14-year-olds before" is not really a good reason to have a 19-year-old superhero dating a 14-year-old superhero.

Still, though, their relationship has remained mostly flirting up until this point, outside of the kiss on the space ship, but A. Colossus made a whole big deal about her being too young and B. they thought that they were going to die. It's a weird time for everyone. So, if they stopped here, it wouldn't be all that creepy.

In Uncanny X-Men #174 (by Chris Claremont, Paul Smith and Bob Wiacek), Kitty stops by while Colossus is having artist's block and she distracts him while also showing off her new control over her powers...

She can now levitate and phase both herself and a second person. She levitate/phases herself and Peter to Ororo's attic apartment and then, well, they start getting hot and heavy until Ororo busts in on them...

So now, they're clearly dating at 19 and 14, respectively. And not just dating, but we get things like in Uncanny X-Men #175, where they make "hey, maybe this can be us someday" eyes at each other during Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor's wedding...

Get dressed up and go to the ballet together, like in Uncanny X-Men #177...

Or prepare to marry a Morlock so that the Morlocks will agree to save Colossus (after the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants basically fused Colossus into a bit piece of molten metal)...

Luckily, Caliban realized, "Oh, wait, it's super uncool to force Kitty Pryde to marry me" and released Kitty from her vow.

The next issue, though, saw Colossus frustrated over the situation while also being jealous over the time that Kitty was now spending with her new friend, Doug Ramsey, who was also 14 years old and had a lot in common with her. Colossus whined to Wolverine about how, back in the Soviet Union, he and Kitty would be married already...

Again, probably technically true, but it doesn't mean that it is a good thing.

Then, of course, Colossus and the X-Men get transported to another planet for Secret Wars (while Kitty is away visiting Massacchusets Academy with Doug after he gets accepted to the school. Emma Frost, naturally, kidnaps the two and tries to force Kitty to join her school. The New Mutants luckily rescue her while the X-Men are away doing the Secret Wars). There, he falls in love with an alien healer...

Sadly, after the heroes turn down Doctor Doom's offer to team-up with him (after he stole the power of the Beyonder), Doom kills them all and Zsaji sacrifices her life to use up all of her healing powers to bring Colossus back from the dead (he then uses healing machines to revive Mister Fantastic, who then figures out a way to revive the other heroes).

A heartbroken Colossus returns home with his teammates and resolves to break up with Kitty...

Colossus gives her the bad news in Uncanny X-Men #183 (by Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr. and Dan Green)...

A pissed off Wolverine lets Colossus get beat up by Juggernaut later in the issue and when Colossus asks him why he abandoned him, Wolverine explains where he stands on the whole Kitty/Colossus issue...

Kitty and Colossus eventually became friends again, but Kitty leaves the X-Men after the "Mutant Massacre" circa Uncanny X-Men #215 and then the two are not teammates again for the next eight years or so, until Colossus ultimately joins Excalibur, by which time a lot of time has passed and Kitty has moved on with Peter Wisdom.

Then Colossus was thought to be dead (while Kitty herself, was missing from the X-Men) and so they were now apart for much longer than they were ever together. However, when Joss Whedon and John Cassaday brought Peter back to life in Astonishing X-Men #4...

You knew that it was only a matter of time before the two would be getting back together and sure enough, by Astonishing X-Men #14, the now-older Kitty and Colossus finally have sex together...

At the end of that run, Kitty seemingly died, and when she came back to the X-Men she and Colossus broke up over his constant need to sacrifice himself at any given moment. They have been slowly getting back together in X-Men Gold, to the point where now their engagement makes total sense.

Their early years, though, are still pretty sketchy.
