WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hellions #12 by Zeb Wells, Stephen Segovia, David Curiel, VC's Ariana Maher and Tom Muller, available now.

The X-women known as Psylocke have one of the stranger histories in Marvel Comics. The more well-known of the two is Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock, telepathic sister of Captain Britain Brian Braddock. Betsy first appeared as a supporting character in Captain Britain comics before joining the X-Men. A couple of years after she joined the team, Betsy was captured by the Hand who inserted her mind into the comatose body of an assassin named Kwannon. For decades Betsy lived in Kwannon's body, gaining the other woman's combat skills and shreds of her personality. Recently, the two were finally separated into individual bodies once more. While each has mostly been living their own lives, they just bumped into each other at the Hellfire Gala. Their encounter reveals that Kwannon had a lot of resentment toward Betsy, but they've achieved a kind of peace with one another.

Although Kwannon or other characters similar to her appeared sporadically over the intervening years, she and Betsy were not genuinely separated until the Hunt for Wolverine storyline more than two decades after they merged. In this story, Betsy's consciousness is absorbed by the psychic villain Sapphire Styx. Betsy was eventually able to use her telepathy to escape, destroying Styx in the process. She used residual power from Styx to create a new body for herself that resembled her original one. With Betsy's mind no longer inhabiting it, Kwannon was shown to return to full life in her original body as well.

Since the beginning of the Dawn of X era, Betsy has taken on the Captain Britain in the pages of Excalibur, while Kwannon has continued to go by Psylocke and is a member of the titular team in Hellions. Kwannon recently helped Betsy return to life after being killed during X of Swords, and this seems to have helped them move past their conflicted feelings about one another. In Hellions #12, they see each other briefly at the Hellfire Gala, and although there is some awkwardness to the meeting, it doesn't escalate into any kind of confrontation. John Greycrow later asks Kwannon if the two are good with each other, to which she replies "Yes. We came to an understanding. And with understanding, compassion may heal the deepest wounds." But she goes on to reveal that for the thirty years she lived inside Betsy, she repeatedly dreamt of killing her. Because of this, she doesn't have much anger left to hold a grudge.

That obviously isn't the most healthy reaction in the world and Kwannon's place on the Hellions means that she still has significant mental issues to work out -- something she is fully aware of. But the fact that she and Betsy can be cordial to each other is an encouraging sign that both can have the full, independent lives they deserve after their traumatic time together.
