WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Planet-Size X-Men #1 by Gerry Duggan, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia & VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now

Throughout Marvel's Hellfire Gala, Emma Frost has teased some incredible "fireworks" that would shock the world. Describing it as the ultimate "you had to be there" moment, the previously-seen fallout has been enough to unsettle human allies and even inspire some enemies of Krakoa in the hope that this will finally unite humanity against mutants once and for all. There's been some mystery as to what sort of revelation could elicit such a response.

But now, Planet-Sized X-Men #1 has revealed how the X-Men and the mutants of Arakko have quickly and efficiently terraformed Mars into a new world for mutants.

First, Magneto brings a massive asteroid of pure iron ore to the planet, crashing it into the crust. Then, Vulcan and Hope -- who is mimicking and amplifying his powers -- use their energy abilities to reach the core of the world and overcharge it, giving it the potential to fully support life and even develop things like an atmosphere. Iceman is then deployed to effectively create polar ice caps for the world, providing water to the long-dead planet. Once the water has effectively created seas on Mars, Hope and Monarch -- the reality-warping Jamie Braddock -- are able to amplify the powers of the Arakko mutant Sobunar of the Depths, whose body contains an entire oceanic ecosystem, allowing life to grow within the waters.

Storm, untethered from any limitations caused by potential damage to the established infrastructures of a world around her, is able to fully unleash her powers and create elements for the world. Pairing Exlir with Xilo, First Defender of This Broken Land, the two mutants are able to bring more and more forms of life to Mars and heal it, even creating an entire atmosphere of breathable oxygen. The final -- and admittedly most dangerous step -- requires Jean Grey and Exodus to work with Lacuna the Knower, whose mutation allows her to know almost all things in the universe. Together, the three are able to invert the External Gate to Otherworld and instead use it to bring all of the living island Arakko -- and its massive population of aggressive mutants -- to the Red Planet, where it quickly adapts and fuses with the world.

Storm helps create a new landmark on the planet -- the Lake Hellias Diplomatic Ring, intended to serve as the ultimate place for peace to be spoken of and achieved in the Solar System. Xilo even uses his powers to create statues of Apocalypse and Genesis within a massive valley, with the promise of only peace in this sacred space. Monarch then uses his reality-warping powers to literally give birth to a second space station for S.W.O.R.D. ready to defend Arakko against any invaders or enemies. As one final touch, Monarch even creates Port Prometheus, a docking station for all visitors to come to. Storm and Magneto then plant a Krakoa Gate, which will allow the X-Men and their allies from Krakoa to visit Mars, now redubbed Planet Arakko and proclaimed to be the new capital of the Sol System.

While this ambitious plan sets up a number of potential challenges for Marvel's mutants, it also solves a number of pressing issues for the X-Men. Since the war-loving mutants of Arakko migrated to the Marvel Universe at the end of the X of Swords crossover, they've sat somewhat uncomfortably alongside Marvel's more familiar mutant population. By moving these mutants and Arakko to another world. Krakoa has put a giant wild card comfortably far away from the rest of the Earth. However, the proclamation that Mars is the capital of the Solar System is sure to ruffle some feathers on Earth and perhaps even in the other corners of the wider Marvel cosmos.

Beyond that, this also gives the X-Men and Marvel's other mutants a new base to operate from if the Earth fully turns against them. It positions mutants as Earth's true future to the universe above the Earth, which will likely only cause more chaos in the future for both humanity and mutants as things become more tense Earth-side. This is a huge step forward for the mutant race that gives them another foundation to expand or a point to fall back to if necessary.

While the X-Men have been deeply intertwined with space since before the Phoenix Saga, this establishes mutantkind's firmest extraterrestrial foothold yet. And long after the Hellfire Gala finishes, its fireworks will still shine over Earth's night skies.
