As the Hellfire Gala prepares to kick off, Marvel has released a new series of variants that turn the spotlight on the X-Men's avant-garde fashion for the event.
Each "fashion variant" will feature artwork by Russell Dauterman, who designed the new mutant fashions, and spotlight a mutant character within its book. "X-Men costumes are one of my favorite things," Dauterman told Entertainment Weekly. "As a teenager that’s what I would draw the most—doodles of an X-character in all their looks. So, I’m absolutely thrilled—designing costumes for the mutants is top-of-the-list, dream job stuff." He added, "The Hellfire Gala is unique and exciting for the X-Men, and this opportunity is really special for me—I tried to have that come across in the character designs. As Emma Frost said, 'The whole world is watching us now. We must be nothing less than fabulous.'"
The twelve issues also feature a connecting cover that shows mutants walking down a green carpet, in lieu of a red one. The fashion designs include Storm sporting a dress that seems to be made literally out of clouds, and Kate Pryde wearing a costume that incorporates various pieces of her history.
The Hellfire Gala will lead to the debut of an all-new X-Men team, which will headline their own ongoing series in July. The gala has also hinted at a massive status quo change for Storm, which was teased in the pages of Marauders.
The Hellfire Gala begins with Marauders #21. Written by Gerry Duggan & Chris Claremont and illustrated by Matteo Lolli & John Bolton, it will go on sale on June 2 from Marvel.
