The new X-Men series Hellions #1 is comprised of numerous dangerous mutants like Mister Sinister, Empath and Wild Child, along with the long-established hero Havok. While Alex Summers is a veteran X-Man and Avenger who's led his own team more than once, Havok has his own complicated history of turning against his fellow heroes and briefly becoming a villain.

From what we've seen of the series' first issue, it looks like Havok's bad side might be coming to the fore again. Now, we're taking a look back at some of the most memorable times that Havok turned on the X-Men in the past, and how this makes him one of Marvel's biggest mutant wild cards.

INFERNO

Although he wasn't a founding member of the team, Havok has worked been a member of the team for decades.  While he was mind-controlled by Erik the Red and forced to attack his brother in one of his early adventures, Havok's first real turn against the came during the events of the "Inferno" crossover. He was one of the members of the team who was present during the battle with the Adversary, which ended with the world believing the team dead.

Hidden away from humanity in Australia, Alex ended up finding a surprising connection with Madelyne Pryor. Although the wife of his brother, the pair were drawn closer while she was further corrupted by the influence of demons from Limbo. When Pryor became the Goblyn Queen and unleashed darkness onto New York during "Inferno," Havok stood by her side and helped her fight against the X-Men during the ensuing battle. However, when Madelyne was killed and the event ended, Havok was essentially welcomed back into the team with ease, with his turn being linked to her manipulations.

X-TINCTION AGENDA

Havok X-Tinction Agenda

Not long after that, Havok was forced through the Siege Perilous, a mystical portal that transports those who walk through it into new lives where they have no memories of their old lives. In that mutant-hating country, he briefly served as a magistrate in its military and fought the X-Men during the "X-Tinction Agenda" crossover.

While he was a magistrate, Havok was genetically bonded with the New Mutants' Wolfsbane, who'd been turned into one of the country's mindless Mutates. While fighting Cyclops, Havok's memory returned, and he eventually helped the X-Men defeat the cybernetic Cameron Hodge. After the crossover ended, Alex remained on Genosha to help rebuild the fallen nation.

BROTHERHOOD

In the '90s, Havok served as the leader of X-Factor, a government-backed mutant team. However, his teammate Random eventually kidnapped him and took him to Dark Beast, an evil version of Hank McCoy from the Age of Apocalypse. The villain was able to brainwash Havok, turning him into the leader of his new Brotherhood of Mutants. He remained with the Brotherhood even after they were made into minions for Onslaught and nearly killed Cyclops in a fight. He still served as a member of the team for a period, even after his mind was restored of Dark Beast's affliction.

Eventually, he turned on Dark Beast and tried to form a new X-Factor. However, not long after, he would be seemingly killed an explosion that shunted his mind into the body of another Havok in the Marvel multiverse. This set up the Mutant X comic series, where he was forced to confront a version of Madelyne Pryor that had actually become Havok's wife instead of Cyclops, who in this world never came back to Earth when the Shi'Ar attacked his family. Eventually, Havok's consciousness made it's way back to the core Marvel Universe, where he was accepted back into the team with open arms.

AXIS

Havok served alongside the X-Men once again, briefly even leading a space-bound squad of X-Men to confront his brother Vulcan. Havok was one of the X-Men who battled against the Phoenix Five and was actually approached by Captain America about becoming a member of the Unity Squad, an Avengers team compromised of both established members of that team and mutant members of the X-Men. He even served as the leader of the team and began a romantic relationship with Wasp.

The pair even had a daughter in an alternate timeline, who was wiped from existence when they saved the world. When AXIS began, Havok was among the heroes influenced by the mental machinations of Red Onslaught. This flipped the morality of all the heroes and the villains, briefly turning the assembled mutants (including Havok) into human-hating would-be despots who sided with a new version of Apocalypse created by the inverted-Genesis. While most of the heroes were restored, Iron Man and Havok were both left corrupted into villains. Havok remained a villain and threatened lives across the Marvel Universe. However, Emma Frost and Polaris eventually worked together to restore Havok's mind to how it was before the events of AXIS.

While that seeming reset Alex Summers back to his original mindset, Hellions seems to indicate that he's as unstable as ever. And now that he's surrounded by a team of former villains, the temptation of the dark side may only grow stronger.
