The following contains spoilers for X-Men Unlimited #49, now available on Marvel Unlimited.

With a new era of the X-Men currently being explored in Marvel Comics, the way has been paved for stories that venture into the adventures of lesser known mutants. X-Men: Unlimited has taken advantage of this unique opportunity, offering short issues that explore many of the lesser known mutants currently residing on Krakoa. The series also debuted the X-Men Green team that has stood out not because of the good they've done but rather the mayhem they've caused in their misguided efforts to save the planet.

Founded by Nature Girl, a mutant with the ability to commune with nature and animals, X-Men Green also consisted of Curse, who could create bad luck with her words, the villain Sauron, and their newest member, the Armageddon Man. This team's sole purpose was to rid the world of humans who harmed the planet and its animal inhabitants. But the more freedom fighting the team did, the more corrupted Nature Girl became. At this point, she has now killed countless people and was even banned from Krakoa. However, X-Men: Unlimited #49 (by Steve Orlando, Emilio Laiso. Rachelle Rosenberg and VC's Joe Sabino) reveals the team's darkest secret and sheds new light on the deadly actions the team has taken since their initial formation.

In recent issues, the Green team stormed a facility to free Armageddon Man so that he could aid Nature Girl on her quest. However, during the course of the mission, Sauron broke a cardinal rule and killed innocent Chimpanzees. When Nature Girl discovered what her teammate had done, a massive fight broke out between them. But this was no ordinary spat, as Nature Girl was fighting to kill and even cut Sauron's tongue out of his mouth. Before things could get further out of hand, Curse made a stood in between her teammates and made a dark confession that changed everything.

Apparently, Curse's desire to be accepted rather than treated as an outcast on Krakoa led to her making a wish that Nature Girl would become her friend. However, any wish Curse makes comes at a cost, and in this case the very soul of her new "friend" was corrupted. Essentially, all the death and destruction that came afterwards was the result of Curse using her power to affect Nature Girl.

Even though Nature Girl didn't believe Curse, the young mutant made another wish, this time in an effort to save her friend. However, the use of her powers comes at the price of a blood sacrifice, and it appears that Curse made the ultimate sacrifice in an effort to correct what had inadvertently been done to the once innocent Nature Girl.

The twist was both shocking and tragic as Curse was always the most chaotic member of the team. Although she had a penchant for causing mischief, at the end of the day all she really wanted was to gain acceptance and the love of a friend. To her credit, however, she finally realized her mistake and did what she could to atone for her error, even though it appears to have cost the young mutant her very life.
