X-MEN: FIRST CLASSAs we reported here at CBR yesterday, actor James McAvoy has been cast as Charles Xavier in what is now being referred to as "X-Men: First Class." It does call into question just when in the timeline of Fox's "X-Men" series the film will take place. Granted, they all take place in some nebulous "near future." Even "Wolverine," which should clearly take place in the past tended to avoid anything that might date it besides the younger Stryker and Xavier.

Release date: June 3rd, 2011THE FLASHHere at CBR, we also reported about the coming of a cycle of films featuring DC Comics characters, starting with the Flash. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer indicated "The Flash is nearing a green light. "Wonder Woman" and "Aquaman" were also mentioned by Meyer as being in development.

Release date: TBATEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Deadline reports Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners -- the lads behind the "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare or Elm Street" remakes -- will produce the new live action film. While the article claims, "the 'Turtles' film puts them into new territory," I'd like to point out that it's still a remake.

Release date: TBAGREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIESWe also reported here at CBR that Green Lantern is set to star in his own animated series. The series is set to air a year after the film is released to theaters. I suppose this may be the reason Bruce Timm recently said their plans to make a sequel to "Green Lantern: First Flight" were scrapped.

Airdate: TBARUNAWAYSDeadline also reports Drew Pearce is in negotiations to write the film. "Pearce is a British writer who created 'No Heroics,' a humorous UK television series about a bar that's a hangout for superheros, who aren't allowed to use their powers while knocking back pints. Pearce will draft 'Runaways' for Pete Sollett, the 'Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist' director who was set in April to direct," writes Deadline's Nick Fleming. I've heard good things about "No Heroics." Might need to take a nice long look at it.

Release date: TBATANK GIRLToday's wacky rumor: Miley Cyrus wants to be Tank Girl. According to a "movie insider" speaking with ShowbizSpy (via Comic Book Movie), "This would be a new big-budget take on Tank Girl ... Miley wants to establish herself in movies and Tank Girl could be the perfect franchise for her." Keep in mind, "movie insider" is even more a tenuous unnamed source than "a studio insider." This has the mists of Mysterio all over it.Release date: TBATHE HOBBITYesterday saw the hopes of the film going into production spike like my blood sugar level at Wonka's candy factory. Wow, that's a tortured metaphor ... anyway, it all began with MarketSaw claiming the project had been greenlit. Both TheOneRing.net and Latino Review's own sources poopooed the greenlighting rumor. Even director Guillermo del Toro says it hasn't happened. Undaunted, MarketSaw's Jim Dorey updated his orignal post with this: "My intel comes straight from the source that gave me the world's first glimpse of a Na'vi. So you can indeed take it to the bank. Do I sound confident? Good. I suspect official word will be coming down the pipe sometime soon." Time will tell of course if he's been right all along, but with MGM's financial situation still in flux (to be courteous about the topic), it's doubtful the greenlight is coming so soon.Release date: 2012DOCTOR WHOFriday means Doctor Who clips from doctorwhotv.co.uk. This week's episode, "Cold Blood":

Airs: Saturday in the UK, June 19th in the StatesWEEKEND STAYING IN Cue that Loverboy track and get me a rum drink, it's Memorial Day weekend! With the long weekend coming, it's nice to see some real deal superhero announcements happening again. Between Cannes, the TV Network Upfronts, and the season finale of "Lost," it seemed nobody wanted their new deals to get lost in the churn. I'm staying in for the weekend as Southern California tends to empty out this time of the year. That also means it might be time for some bowling and some "Red Dead Redemption" once it arrives. Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya bracing for the future threat of holiday weekend lounging.
