Crossover events in the X-Men world usually mean big changes are coming. Having just wrapped up the X of Swords tournament, the mutants are still reeling from what transpired. Back in 1993, another crossover event altered the course for the X-Men for some time after as X-Factor, X-Force, X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and Wolverine all converged to make the epic "Fatal Attractions" saga.

Magneto's vision of a mutant dominated world had been building for a long time. Although the world thought him dead with the destruction of Asteroid M, his teachings lived on. Inspiring his fanatic followers to unite, they called themselves the Acolytes. Led by Fabian Cortez, who tried to make Magneto into a martyr, the Acolytes began to unleash their twisted version of Magneto's words by attacking humans. The team tried to recruit Quicksilver to be their new figurehead, as he was their messiah's son, but he was repulsed by their actions.

It was later revealed that Magneto was not dead. In fact, during his absence, he had pulled pieces of Asteroid M and Cable's spaceship Graymalkin together to form a new home base. Outfitting it with Shi'ar technology, he said it was a sanctuary for mutants and named it Avalon. A mutant named Exodus became Magneto's envoy, visiting Earth to try and bring back mutants to live in his new paradise. Colossus, a long-time member of the X-Men, was recruited to Magneto's side after the death of his sister. Losing Colossus was a hit to the team, especially when Magneto's forces caused chaos on Earth when they released an electromagnetic blast. Fed up with the conflict, Professor Xavier equipped himself in a Shi'ar suit that allowed him to walk and led the team to face Magneto.

All of the drama built towards X-Men #25 by Fabian Nicieza, Andy Kubert, Matt Ryan, Bill Oakley, and Joe Rosas. The X-Men finally went head to head against Magneto. Wolverine attacked the villain, ripping at Magneto with his adamantium claws. When Magneto was pushed to his limit, he used his master over metal to rip the adamantium off of Wolverine's bones in a horrific and torturous display. It seemed that everything Magneto had done in the past, the betrayals and evil, paled in comparison to this action. To save Wolverine, Professor Xavier used a powerful blast of his telepathy to send Magneto's consciousness out of his body. Wolverine barely survived the experience and Magneto ended up in a coma.

After "Fatal Attractions" ended, the X-Men team still felt the rippling effects from it. Wolverine's claws were an actual part of his skeleton, not a formation from the metal encasing his bones as previously believed. He survived the metal removal but it pushed his healing factor, and sanity, to their limits. He left the X-Men for a time, becoming more feral and lost without his mutant powers. After fighting Deadpool in the wild, Wolverine's healing abilities came back and he eventually returned to the X-Men.

Onslaught preparing for battle

Unforeseen by Professor Xavier at the time, his telepathic removal of Magneto's mind would come back to haunt them later. While in the Astral Plane the portion of Xavier's mind used to conjure the blast combined with Magneto's consciousness to form the evil psychic entity known as Onslaught. He possessed the mutant abilities of both his creators along with other powers connected to the astral plane. The creature was able to manifest itself in the real world to wreak havoc not just on the X-Men, but the entire Marvel Universe.

Even Magneto's base of Avalon, after it was destroyed, still echoes in the world of X-Men. At one point pieces of Avalon were later gathered by Cable for his own social experiment island of Providence. More profoundly, Avalon served as one of the templates for the current mutant nation of Krakoa. Avalon was supposed to be a place of goodness and safety, as is Krakoa, but it lost its way without balance. With Krakoa the mutants aim to give all sides of their group a voice, hoping to correct the errors of the past. If factions on the island begin to keep secrets from each other, or work against the others, another event like "Fatal Attractions" might be in their future.
