Time is running out for Marvel's original, younger X-Men. Jean Grey, Cyclops, Angel, Iceman and Beast may be stuck in the present-day, but an upcoming X-Men event will look to bring forth their final days.Extermination, from writer Ed Brisson and artist Pepe Larraz, will jump 20 years into the future, where mutantkind is on the verge of extinction, and the time-displaced X-Men may be at fault. Though the members of X-Men Blue believed they resolved their time paradox, with the belief they would eventually be returned to their proper place in time, Extermination looks to accelerate the process by kickstarting their elimination.RELATED: X-Men: Extermination May Introduce The Gifted's Strucker KidsOver the last few weeks, Larraz has teased fans online by posting pages from the X-Men event, with his opening image teasing the first page and panel from Extermination #1. The non-colored page featured the Xavier Institute of the future in ruins from a "Countdown to Extermination" post-credits scene. These scenes have popped up in various X-Men titles to build excitement prior to the event. Since then, colorist Marte Gracia also shared the completed colored page, featuring a better looked at a mysterious hooded figure walking towards the remains of the facility.

Of course, this prompts a host of interesting questions, beginning with who his unidentified person is? Because of the first post-credits scene in X-Men Gold #27, we know the Sentinels are to blame for the attack on the Xavier Institute, and not our mystery guest. However, there's still the question of who this person is, and how big of a role will they play in Extermination?

Thankfully, we have a few educated guesses as to the character's identity, with one clocking in as the odds-on favorite.

Nate Grey

The Age of Apocalypse version of Cyclops' son has been missing from the Marvel Universe for the last couple of years, but Cable's "half-brother" Nate Grey returned in Cable #152 as they fought a techno-organic villain from the far future.

With Extermination also taking place in the future, there is a small chance Nate remained there following his adventure with Cable, allowing him to become involved in the event's proceedings. Adding Nate to Extermination would immediately show how big the stakes are, as he quickly became a fan-favorite character among fans who saw him escape the Age of Apocalypse timeline.

Ahab

The cover for Extermination #2 featured Charles Xavier’s time-displaced students from X-Men Blue in the grasp of the mutant-hunting villain, Ahab, with the young X-Men donning the red bodysuits and markings of the mutant-hunting Hounds.

Ahab is closely associated with Rachel Grey, who now goes by the codename Prestige in X-Men Gold. Rachel comes from the Days of Future Past timeline, where she is one of Ahab’s Hounds. So far, there hasn't been any word on whether Prestige would factor into the Extermination series following Ahab’s return, but since we do know he will play some type of role, it's not inconceivable for the villain to come looking to the school for more mutants to turn to his evil cause.

Iceman

Now we come to our most likely suspect for Extermination #1's mystery character. There haven't been any obvious clues that would lead someone to suspect it is Iceman, but when you've been keenly paying attention to each Extermination post-credits scene and nugget of information like we have, then you realize how Iceman has suspiciously been missing from much of the fanfare.

For example, the post-credits scenes that have included the time-displaced X-Men have made a point to show the older versions of Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey and Angel. However, Iceman is nowhere to be found. Why is that? None of his teammates have openly mentioned why he's missing, even after Beast was evaporated by a Sentinel.

Also, future issues of X-Men Blue tease Magneto traveling to the future to insert himself into Extermination. Covers to Issues #33 and #34 in August also show the older X-Men, with no Iceman in sight. There has to be a good reason for this, and our guess is because he left the team and has now returned after the Sentinel attack, only to find his friends and teammates killed.

Extermination will most likely mark the end of the original X-Men's time in the present. Each member has drastically changed from when they first arrived: Jean Grey had her powers evolve while also dying and coming back to life; Cyclops, unfortunately, got to see what kind of person he becomes when he grows up; Iceman came to accept his true sexuality; Angel gained new cosmic powers; and Beast began to dabble in mysticism.

If Charles Xavier's first students make it back to the past alive, there is no guarantee they will still be the same as when they originally left.
