WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Excalibur #25, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The X-Men have come together with their enemies to form the nation of Krakoa, all in hope of establishing a safe place for themselves and future generations of mutants in an uncertain world. These future generations are already at work being trained for the coming challenges, with some of the youngest even proving crucial to solving the conflicts of today.

Maggie Braddock helps lead the war effort against Merlyn in Excalibur #25 (by Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Joe Caramagna) and proves herself as an up and coming leader of the mutants.

X-Men Excalibur Avalon Maggie Braddock 2

Maggie Braddock debuted in the story "Cross-Atlantic Caper" (by Marc Guggenheim Leah Williams, and Alitha Martinez) that appeared in X-Men: Gold Annual #1. Maggie is the next generation of the historically significant Braddock family, who've had important roles to play across the history of Britain. The daughter of former Captain Britain Brian Braddock and his magical mutant wife Meggan, Maggie has been impressive from the onset. Despite her youth, the young mutant has already proven capable of speech and increased reason, speaking with the authority of a woman decades older. She said her first words within months of being born, and has remained a surprising piece of counsel for Avalon, the last remaining location in Otherworld still allied with Krakoa.

This role has become increasingly important to the mutants who fight alongside Avalon, as Maggie has done her best to help contend with the war effort being waged by Merlyn and King Arthur against the mutants. The fight for Avalon ends up being determined in part by Maggie, who works out the strategy of the heroes. She also proves to be pragmatic in a way few other heroes have been shown to be, agreeing to not take the battlefield and remain alongside Jamie Braddock and the dragon-transformed Shogo to enact the emergency destruction of the Krakoa Gate in the event of Excalibur's failure. This failsafe will keep the forces of Otherworld from launching a surprise attack on the mutant nation.

X-Men Excalibur Avalon Maggie Braddock 5

In many ways, Maggie Braddock has become the X-Men's answer to the Fantastic Four's Valeria Richards. A young addition to a heroic family, she stands out by being brilliant enough to counteract her youth and potential vulnerability. Maggie involvement in conflicts -- at least from a strategic standpoint -- indicates that she already has the makings of a great leader in the future. She could continue to be a commander for the heroes in the coming years, with her mutant (and mystical) heritage making her a much needed connection between Krakoa and Otherworld, potentially making her one of Marvel's most important figures in the years to come.

Marvel has recently been teasing a future that will see new generations of Avengers, X-Men, and other heroes rise up to confront terrifying threats. Maggie could easily become one such figure representing the X-Men in this foretold future. As it currently stands, Maggie could enter her adult years as one of Marvel's most formidable strategic minds, giving hope to the cause of mutant stability for the future.
