Bryan Singer is used to dealing with a huge cast. After all, there are giants running around his next feature Jack the Giant Slayer, and a sizable ensemble in the works for his next project, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The busy director spoke to MTV about balancing characters seen in X-Men, X2, X-Men: Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and those from 2011's X-Men: First Class.

When asked exactly who the protagonists will be, Singer responded, "I don't want to say yet, or talk about that yet, but I will say that every character has a very important function in the story. The story is designed and catered to the combined cast. It's not just throwing in people to occupy the screen, occupy the billboards. The story 'Days of Future Past,' and our version of Days of Future Past is geared very much toward the mass cast and all their relationships and all their foibles and their achievements."

So far the cast includes First Class stars Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as well as their modern day counterparts Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Hugh Jackman will also appear as Wolverine, while Famke Janssen played it coy when asked about a potential role in the film as well.

But what about Last Stand survivor Storm, as played by Academy Award winner Halle Berry? "I can't say," Singer said. "I don't know yet. And it's not necessarily a deal making aspect at all," he said. "I want to make sure it'll make sense. But I love working with her."

X-Men: Days of Future Past was written by Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) and will also star Nicholas Holt, Ellen Page, Jennifer Lawrence and Anna Paquin with plenty of room for other former X-cast members to join in on the fun. The film opens July 18, 2014.
