After a series of rumors and leaks, the first official trailer for Dark Phoenix has arrived. The next film in the X-Men franchise will adapt Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne's iconic "Dark Phoenix Saga," which also inspired 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

Jean Grey actress Sophie Turner introduced the trailer debut her appearance on CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden. At two minutes long, the trailer includes a series of tantalizing teases, including a shot of the team heading into space in their jet. The core team, sans Jean, can also be seen wearing costumes inspired by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's New X-Men run.

The trailer also appears to show Magneto creating a mutant community on an island; this will likely be Genosha or some version of it. Additionally, it includes some flashbacks to Jean's youth, including a terrible car accident she caused with her powers. The trailer offers only a hint of her powers, but it does tease the transformation to come with shots of Jean's glowing red eyes and cracking skin.

Rumors have swirled around Dark Phoenix since at least March, when Fox moved the film from its original release date of Nov. 2, 2018, to Feb. 14, 2019, and again delayed The New Mutants, this time to Aug. 2, 2019. Speculation that Dark Phoenix had been quietly dropped from the Fox calendar was quickly swatted down by Fox, as was a report that reshoots were expected to span three months (it’s more like two and a half weeks).

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film opens February 14, 2019.
