X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg plans to show how powerful Jean Grey's Phoenix persona is by having her lose control and impale a major character, effectively killing them, according to a new report from That Hashtag Show.
The report doesn't reveal who will be killed by the Phoenix, but -- given that it has to be a major player in this universe for it to truly be effective -- it proposes four candidates: Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult).
Seeds for the Phoenix's return were sown in last year's X-Men: Apocalypse, where Jean unleashed her power to destroy Apocalypse. Previously, the Phoenix appeared in the 2006 film The Last Stand, though many fans thought that film didn't do the iconic story justice. Dark Phoenix has recently wrapped production, but it's nearly a full year out from release.
The X-Men film franchise is no stranger to loss. Since X2, beloved characters have met untimely and heroic ends, with the latest happening in this year's Logan. That streak doesn't look to be changing with the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Arriving in theaters on November 2, 2018, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, Olivia Munn, and Jessica Chastain.
