Even as news broke that franchise stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender are returning for the sequel, which as long rumored will be directed by Simon Kinberg, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Chastain is in talks for a role.
However, it's not just any role but that of Lilandra, empress of the alien Shi'ar, who's on a mission to imprison and execute the Dark Phoenix (Sophie Turner's Jean Grey), which brings her face to face with the X-Men. The website characterizes Lilandra as the film's "villain."
While the two-time Oscar nominee is still in negotiations, it's worth noting she's been eager to dip her toes into the comic book world for some time, and actually had a role in Marvel’s Iron Man 3 before eventually pulling out of the project. Since then, she’s voiced her interest in playing powerful women that get to kick some butt -- a role much like that of Empress Lilandra.
Opening Nov. 2, 2018, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Ship as Storm, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
