As part of Entertainment Weekly's first look at director Simon Kinberg's highly anticipated movie is piece of concept art that offers a tease of Jean Grey's big, fiery transformation from powerful mutant to one of the most destructive and dangerous faces in the universe.

X-Men Dark Phoenix Concept Art

EW reports that the film, set in 1992 — about a decade after the events of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse — opens with the mutants now viewed as national heroes. When the team is sent into space on a rescue mission, a solar flare strikes the X-Jet, and the energy ignites “a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean.” In the art, we see this moment captured with Jean hovering in space, covered in flames while ripping a space shuttle in half with her raw power in a sequence that appears to be both frightening and devastating.
