The following contains spoilers for X-Men #20, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

The X-Men have always made a habit of turning enemies into steadfast allies, with redemption and growth very much at the core of the franchise. That's become especially pronounced in the modern era, where plenty of major villains have committed surprisingly heroic deeds. But now, that ideal is about to be put to the test -- and if it holds true, it could allow two of Marvel's most dangerous villains to become surprising assets to the mutant nation.

Krakoa's newest citizens who were teased at the end of X-Men #20 (by Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli, Federico Blee, and VC's Clayton Cowles), might just be Kingpin and Typhoid Mary. This means that two of Daredevil's most enduring enemies might have found a loophole that could grant them sanctuary from justice in the mutant nation. While this will certainly cause problems for the X-Men, it could also quietly give the mutants some very useful allies.

How Kingpin and Typhoid Mary Enter Krakoa

X-Men Kingpin Typhoid Mary Krakoa Citizens Good 2

Wilson Fisk's recent encounters with the X-Men haven't necessarily been the most positive, as they were among the many heroes targeted by the Kingpin during his tenure as the mayor of New York City. The Krakoan Embassy known as the Treehouse was targeted by his Thunderbolts during Devil's Reign. And, his past criminal ties to Emma Frost became public knowledge -- endangering her position as one of Krakoa's major cultural ambassadors. The event ended with Kingpin and his wife Typhoid Mary going into hiding, effectively faking his death as a means of escaping the chaos their lives had descended into.

However, Typhoid Mary's status as a mutant means she is technically offered Krakoan citizenship which will keep her out of legal trouble with other nations. As a result, her spouse is afforded the same protection, meaning Kingpin can not only avoid legal scrutiny if he remains on the island, but he can also use the Krakoa Gates. Fisk and Mary becoming citizens of Krakoa will surely cause a whole new slew of headaches for the X-Men. It would also risk enraging the rest of the hero community even further -- especially his old enemies such as Daredevil and Elektra. However, their unique skills and experience might be a boon for Krakoa, as well.

Kingpin and Typhoid Mary Could Potentially Help the X-Men

Typhoid Mary and Kingpin could become useful members of the mutant community, which would be a big turn for both characters. Mary is a deadly fighter -- making her an ideal candidate for a group like X-Force, so long as she remains diligent. Kingpin's strategic skill and deep knowledge about the villains of the Marvel Universe may be a crucial resource, providing all sorts of useful intel to the mutant nation. His underworld connections provide a useful fountain of knowledge for the Marauders, giving them more ways to rescue mutants. He could likely find a friend in Sebastian Shaw, with the pair potentially being positioned to become the world's most effective smugglers. This is to say nothing of his sheer strength, which makes him a surprisingly useful figure to rely on in a fight.

Even the potential PR nightmare of making Kingpin a citizen could end up being a useful tool for the mutants. One of the underlying values of the Krakoa Era has been the idea of redemption, giving former X-Men villains like Apocalypse, Gorgon, and Shadow King the chance to find better paths. The X-Men offering Typhoid Mary (and by extension Kingpin) the same chance to make themselves more heroic pushes the idea that Krakoa is a place of growth. It also proves that mutant and human co-existence is still possible and that the mutant nation won't turn its back on its rightful citizens even if they're humans. While Kingpin's arrival on Krakoa invites a lot of problems, it's also a great opportunity if the X-Men utilize it properly.
