There are forces within the Marvel Universe that are capable of surviving almost anything, even finding ways to overcome death at its purest form. But it's not just the Hulk who's proven to be immortal lately, with the Chris Claremont Anniversary Special seemingly confirming the eventual fate of one major New Mutant and suggesting it could carry on for the rest of time.

After proving herself by fighting the Shadow King across history, Hela announces that Dani Moonstar will fight against his influence even after her eventual death, effectively confirming that Moonstar will live on as an immortal "Champion of Life."

The majority of the Chris Claremont Anniversary Special focuses on Dani Moonstar and her connection to Hela, the Asgardian God of Death. The pair became unwittingly connected during a period when Dani and the rest of her fellow Net Mutants had been sent to Asgard. Separated from her fellow heroes, Dani bonded with a wounded stallion she found and named Brightwind. However, she didn't realize this was one of the mystical steeds of the Valkyrie, the warrior figures tasked with bringing the souls of the dead to the realm of Hel. Even after returning to Earth, Dani retained this connection, despite her lack of desire to be tied with Hela. This has played a factor in multiple stories over the years, most recently during the War of the Realms event.

Despite this, the Asgardian figure comes to Dani Moonstar in the Chris Claremont Anniversary Special to speak about her faith in Dani and what she believes the New Mutants' true role might be. Confronting her along with the likes of the Phoenix Force and Death, Hela challenges Dani to prove herself, despite her reluctance to serve at the behest of Hela. Dani is sent across the world and the timestream, where she encounters many unexpected battles against the Shadow King. In each of them, Moonstar is able to fight him and force him to retreat. Proving herself by helping save the likes of Invisible Woman, Storm and Captain Marvel across the timestream, passing Hela's test.

Greeting Dani, Hela reveals that she still considers the defiant mutant her "daughter" for her role as a Valkyrie. By proving a worthy adversary for the Shadow King, Hela charges Moonstar with combatting him throughout time. She even reveals to Dani that,t this way, Moonstar can continue to fight the Shadow King even after she's passed into the realm of death. Dani ultimately agrees, and Hela announces that when the time comes for Moonstar to die, she will embrace her true destiny as a Valkyrie and remain for "time everlasting" as a champion of life. It's a major upgrade for the mutant, whose connection with the Valkyrie has remained strong, even in the modern-day. However, this confirms that she'll eventually embrace this power more holistically.

This suggests that Dani's true connection to Hela remains and that Dani is fated to be one of the mutants who live into the distant future, albeit in a more mystical form. As Hela's unlikely Champion of Life, Moonstar will remain to fight the Shadow King for all of the time, which could be part of the reason the psychic villain seems to focused on Dani and the New Mutants on Krakoa, despite the nominal peace that exists between mutants on the island. But it's a perfect role for Moonstar to take going forward, especially given the New Mutants' history of fighting the Shadow King. It also means that even if the current generation of mutants dies out, there's another immortal figure in the Marvel Universe who will remain to remember them and fight on.
