In most realities across the Marvel multiverse, Cyclops is largely defined by his place at the head of the X-Men. As one of the team's founding members, he's shepherding the mutant heroes through some particularly tough times. But there are some timelines where Scott Summers branches out in surprising ways -- like the Mutant X timeline where he became a space pirate or the grim Ultimate Universe possibility where he became a doomed Captain America.

Neither of them has anything on the bizarreness of one of the multiverse's most powerful versions of Cyclops. In the reality of Earth-TRN421 from Marvel 100th Anniversary Special: X-Men (by Robin Furth, Jason Masters, James Campbell, Vero Gandini, and VC's Cory Petit), Cyclops ended up becoming not just the leader of the X-Men, but President of the United States.

What Happened In The Marvel 100th Anniversary Special?

In 2014, Marvel decided to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Timely Comics -- the publisher that would eventually become Marvel. The five one-shots imagined wild future versions of major Marvel teams, hypothesizing how the superhero universe could look one hundred years after the official beginning of Marvel Comics in 1961. One of these books was the Marvel 100th Anniversary Special: X-Men, which picked up in a world where the X-Men had finally earned the respect and admiration of the world. They did this by helping to save New York from a malfunctioning Large Hadron Collider.

Cyclops was able to transfer some of that goodwill into a successful political career, fighting for mutant rights within the system of power. It reached a point where Cyclops was elected President of the United States -- making his frequent love interest Emma Frost his First Lady and recruiting former teammates like Wolverine to serve as his Secret Service. The situation wasn't perfect though and the White House was often beset by anti-mutant protestors. Groups like the Purifiers and the new Hellfire Club also continued to plague the heroes but the X-Men largely and openly consider this a world where they've won.

President Cyclops Eventually Doomed the Marvel Universe

But it turns out, things wouldn't have worked out in the long run. Cyclops' rule would always seemingly cause enough unrest to cause an international event. The resulting chaos would build until it reached a boiling point, leaving the world to turn on itself and be destroyed. Sensing this inevitability, the Phoenix Force (seemingly still carrying some level of affection for Scott) decided to remake the universe into a more agreeable place. After erasing Emma from the timeline, the Phoenix Force steadily undid the rest of this world's X-Men, generating enough power to reset the timeline and restore Jean Grey to life. As a result, the newly altered timeline never saw Scott embrace the ambition of becoming President -- marrying Jean instead of Emma and inadvertently saving the world.

It's a dour thought, as Cyclops has proven time and time again to be a strong moral compass and leadership skills. But it's far from the first time increased power for Cyclops ended up leading to death and destruction. Avengers vs. X-Men and its aftermath dealt with a far more dangerous and volatile Cyclops, hinting at the kind of damage an untethered Scott Summers could do on a global scale. While he may have only been President for a short while, it's probably a good thing in the long run for any Marvel Universe to not let Cyclops get too much power, otherwise, things can very quickly get out of control.
