WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #22, by Matthew Rosenberg, Salvador Larroca, David Messina, Guru-eFX and Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

When they're not saving the world from Apocalypse or protecting young mutants, the X-Men are comics' best superhero soap opera. At any given moment, the latest incarnation of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters usually places dozens of young mutants under one roof. Between their close quarters, raging hormones and constant near-death experiences, almost every member of the X-Men has romantically paired off with at least one of their teammates over the years.

The X-Men have a few of the most iconic couples in comics, the relationship between Cyclops and Jean Grey is a core part of the X-Men's history. As those two grew from two of Charles Xavier's first students into the team's core leaders, their romance has remained a consistent aspect of both characters. Despite periods of extreme turbulence, those two heroes always seem to find a way back to each other.

However, Scott Summers and Jean Grey have been dead for a decent chunk of the past decade. While they both had fairly recent resurrections, Jean Grey has been trapped in the Age of X-Man for the past few months. While she and most of the X-Men were trapped in that alternate timeline, Cyclops and Wolverine led a team of veteran mutants through one of the deadliest eras in X-Men history.

When the X-Men return from the Age of X-Man in Uncanny X-Men #22, Jean embraces Cyclops as their teammates save each other from certain doom.

Cyclops Jean Grey Reunion

While that might seem like a typical superhero reunion, it's the first time Cyclops and Jean Grey have been alive and together for more than a few seconds in 15 years.

In 2004, Jean Grey died in Grant Morrison and Phil Jiminez's New X-Men #150, shortly after Cyclops had a psychic affair with the telepathic Emma Frost. After Jean's death, Scott and Emma Frost had an off-and-on relationship that lasted until he contracted a lethal mutant plague in 2016's Death of X miniseries, by Charles Soule, Jeff Memire and Aaron Kuder.

When Jean Grey was revived in the aptly-titled Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey, the Phoenix Force used its limitless cosmic power to briefly resurrect Cyclops and reunite the couple. However, Scott died in Jean's arms when she rejected the untamed power of the Phoenix.

Jean and Cyclops parted on good terms after that fleeting reunion, which set up their full reunion in this issue. When Jean asks Scott to take off the visor that holds his optic blasts at bay, she's horrified to see that he lost an eye during the struggles of the past few months.

Cyclops Jean Grey Missing Eye

While there's no guarantee that Cyclops and Jean will get back together, both of the heroes other prospective suitors, Emma Frost and Wolverine, are visibly disappointed by the couple's reunion.

Together with the assembled X-Men, Cyclops makes the decision to destroy Cerebro, which Emma was using to make the world forget about the existence of mutants. As the whole world looked on, Scott and Jean stood with the assembled X-Men and reaffirmed their shared desire to fight for a better world, no matter the cost.

With House of X and Powers of X imminently set to dramatically redefine the X-Men's world, it's not clear what the future holds for Cyclops, Jean Grey and the rest of Marvel's mutants, but for the first time in a long time, it looks like they'll face it together.
