The X-Men have faced many ill-tempered mutants over the decades, and one group of mutants that constantly comes back in one way or another is the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Whether they're led by Magneto, Mystique, or another mutant, the Brotherhood can be guaranteed to prove capable.

The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has gone by a few other names, such as the Brotherhood of Mutants and Freedom Force. In this list of times, they fought and teamed up with the X-Men, those incarnations are taken into account. Because of the antagonistic nature of their relationship, team-ups are broadly defined.

10 Fight: The Arrest of Magneto

Mystique turned the Brotherhood into a government-sponsored team. As their first mission, they were tasked with arresting Magneto. Magneto made an appearance at a Holocaust memorial where Holocaust survivors and their families traded information about lost family members. Magneto was reforming his ways and cooperating with the X-Men at the time, so a battle ensued that saw Magneto use his powers to primarily protect bystanders.

When it was made clear that Mystique and the Brotherhood were operating on behalf of the government, Magneto surrendered and allowed himself to be taken into custody. Part of the reasoning was to protect the Holocaust Memorial rather than seeing it destroyed in a heated battle. It was a gesture that helped his case in front of the World Court that the Master of Magnetism had changed his ways.

9 Team-up: The Assassination of Graydon Creed

This wasn't a typical team-up. At this point, the Brotherhood didn't officially exist. However, Mystique wanted her mutant-hating son killed but knew he would become a martyr. She enlisted a dying Pyro and an unwitting X-Factor in her plan.

Masquerading as X-Factor's Government liaison Valerie Cooper, she drew X-Factor into assisting her apparent attempt to kill Creed. This gave the mutant-hating Presidential candidate a false sense of security, and, when Pyro was prevented from stopping another assassin, a time-traveling Mystique, Graydon Creed was attacked with a plasma grenade and reduced to ash.

8 Fight: Santo Marco

Toad, Mastermind, Magneto, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver loom over the five original X-Men

The Brotherhood took over the South American country of Santo Marco. Magneto was an especially harsh ruler to the human population. Professor X and the X-Men went into the country in their civilian identities.

They promptly attacked the castle, unaware that Magneto had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The X-Men drove off Magneto and his team, but not before he set an atomic bomb to destroy the country. It would be the first time that Quicksilver would undermine Magneto's plans.

7 Team-up: The Beast Joins the Brotherhood

Shortly after mutating himself into his furry form, the Beast ran afoul of Mastermind, the Blob, and Unus the Untouchable as the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Mastermind had convinced the Beast that he had killed Iron Man, and the grief temporarily robbed the former X-Man of most of his memories.

He assisted them in stealing a large and valuable diamond. Mastermind planned to sell it over and over, using illusions to fool buyers into actually taking custody of an illusionary gem. Beast's memories returned and he thwarted the trio's schemes.

6 Fight: Their First Fight On Asteroid M

The original X-men fighting brotherhood of evil mutants

After the X-Men stopped Magneto's efforts in Santo Marco, he set out to find out where their headquarters was. To do so, he had Toad masquerade as a new, undiscovered mutant. When the X-Men discovered that they had been duped, the Brotherhood battled and kidnapped the Angel to barter with.

The Toad escaped custody, and the X-Men followed him to Asteroid M. During a pitched battle, the Asteroid began to fall apart. Both teams barely escaped with their lives. Jack Kirby's art made the destruction of the Asteroid headquarters spectacular.

5 Team-up: Professor X's Brotherhood

Cerebro gained sentience and independence, imprisoning Professor X in the process. Professor X gathered and trained the Brotherhood to fight Cerebro and its fake X-Men. When the real X-Men tracked him to Alcatraz, there was a brief fight until Kitty Pryde realized that Professor X had been training the Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood had a misguided possessiveness of Professor X. This led to friction between the two groups, but they managed to work together to battle one of Cerebro's minions. They later helped Mystique go after Machine Man before disbanding.

4 Fight: Trying to Get Rogue to Rejoin the Brotherhood

After Mystique learned that Rogue had joined the X-Men, she became convinced that she was with the team against her will. A diversionary attack by the Brotherhood was launched against the X-Men. As part of this attack, Colossus was super-heated and quickly cooled, nearly killing him.

Meanwhile, Mystique snuck into the X-Mansion and impersonated Rogue. Professor X held Rogue back against the Brotherhood of Evil because he was uncertain about where her loyalties might lie. As Professor X laid unconscious from Mystique's attack, Rogue rejected Mystique's "rescue," convincing the leader of the Brotherhood that she was with the X-Men of her own choice.

3 Team-up: Fall of the Mutants (Dallas, Texas)

The X-Men and Freedom Force went to Dallas, Texas. In fighting each other, they triggered a spell by the ancient mystical entity known as the Adversary. This puts a lot of innocent people at risk. The two teams set aside their differences to work together to save lives before a final battle ensued.

This all occurred in front of news cameras. Mystique tries to spin it into Freedom Force's favor, and Havok takes the opportunity to address anti-mutant bias. When the Adversary reveals himself and triggers an explosion that keeps Freedom Force outside to watch the X-Men die to save everyone.

2 Fight: Assassination Attempt on Robert Kelly

The first time Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants appeared, it was to assassinate anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly. The X-Men find Kitty Pryde possessed by the mind of her adult self from a future where Kelly's death was the first step to Sentinels enslaving the world. She directs them to save Senator Kelly.

The battle is intense, with the X-Men having trouble with opponents that had never fought before. The Brotherhood was guided by the precog Destiny directing them to anticipate the X-Men's tactics. It isn't until Kitty interfered with Destiny's shot at Senator Kelly, changing the course of the future.

1 Team-up: First Battle of Muir Isle

Donald Pierce's Reavers attacked Muir Isle to kill the injured mutants under care at the facility. While Banshee and Polaris began protecting them admirably, they were outnumbered. The US Government sent in the former Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, then known as Freedom Force, as well as Forge, to help.

Initially, they did well, but the Reavers began to decimate their ranks. The Reavers were helped by a corrupted Legion who personally killed Destiny. It looked like Mystique and Pyro were going to be killed as well when Forge took a sniper's position and forced the Reavers to flee. In the end, Mystique is so angry at Destiny's death, she goes on to be an extreme threat to the X-Men in the years to come.
