The August issues of X-Men Blue (Issues #33 and #34) will pull back the curtain on what exactly took place when the Master of Magnetism, Magneto, traveled to the future using his time platform. Of course, the significance of this particular future is Marvel Comics has featured it in post-credits scenes to tease the upcoming X-Men event, Extermination.

The Extermination epilogues have taken place twenty years in a future where the X-Men have been systematically slaughtered by the mutant-hunting Sentinels, with it all tying back to the original, time-displaced members of X-Men Blue. While the young X-Men are the key to Extermination, Magneto has a role to play in the event as well, and a preview of this week's X-Men Blue #33 holds the first clue.

The Future Is Calling

During the X-Men Blue Mothervine story arc, Magneto was attacked by Miss Sinister's army of Mauraders, as well as innocent mutants infected with Mothervine. Overmatched, Magneto activated his time platform to escape, but not before killing many of the Mothervine mutants in self-defense. The preview of X-Men Blue #33 begins at the moment Magneto teleports to the future, with a caption box revealing it to be 19 years from the present day.

While this could be seen as a very small plot point, it offers an important detail pertaining to Extermination. If Magneto arrived a year ahead of the Extermination post-credits scenes, then it is quite possible actions taken by the Master of Magnetism impacted the X-Men event a year later.

Also, walking along the empty, ruined streets leaves Magneto time alone with his thoughts, which torment him with visions of the mutants he slaughtered because of Mothervine. Is Magneto being driven mad? And if so, this could be another example of how he ends up changing the future to cause Extermination.

However, the much scarier proposition is Magneto spends an entire calendar year in the future, learning valuable information regarding past events and uses this knowledge when he returns to the present day. Magneto is already seeking revenge against Emma Frost for her alliance with Miss Sinister, and future issues of X-Men Blue have teased Magneto reforming his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Instead of the group coming together in a revenge scheme, it may be Magneto's way of shaping the future to fit his needs.

Of course, we should learn more about Magneto's trip through time when X-Men Blue #33 goes on sale this week, but we'll be keeping our eyes open for more Extermination clues.
