WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Last Annihilation: Wakanda #1, available now from Marvel.

One of the most notable couplings of established Marvel heroes in the 21st century was the cementing of Black Panther and Storm as each other's primary love interest. Both had other lovers over the years, but the powerful icons actually married and ruled Wakanda together in holy matrimony (at least until the circumstances of the world split them apart.) Although they're still nominally apart due to their respective duties, it's clear both of them still share deep feelings for one another. Now, they might not be the only coupling that could unite the mutant nation of Krakoa with Wakanda.

Shuri and Manifold are shown growing closer in Last Annihilation: Wakanda #1 by Evan Narcisse, German Peralta, Jesus Aburtov, and VC's Cory Petit -- setting them up to potentially become a mutant/Wakandan power couple like T'Challa and Storm have been in the past.

Black Panther Shuri Manifold X-Men 1

Although Abigail Brand has been reluctant to recruit the full might of Earth's heroes to the Last Annihilation -- partly to shore up the gratitude of the universe towards the mutants of S.W.O.R.D. and their contributions to the war effort -- she does decide that Black Panther and his intergalactic empire could be a useful tool in combating the forces of Dormammu. She recruits T'Challa and his allies to assist the Shi'Ar -- already a somewhat dicey proposition, given the shaky relationship Wakanda has with the Shi'Ar. Black Panther agrees, and assembles a group to venture into the cosmos to assist. Among their number are both Shuri and Manifold.

During the build-up to their arrival on the battlefield, Manifold playfully flirts with Shuri -- referring to the mission to fight back against Dormammu as their first "date." Shuri corrects him that she's still holding out hope he takes her somewhere nice for such an occasion. Manifold promises to take her up on that if he ever gets vacation time away from his position in S.W.O.R..D. It's a minor moment, but a notable one nonetheless -- especially later when Shuri shows great concern after Manifold is injured in the battle and personally rescues him. Seeing Shuri and Manifold flirt is a good reminder that these heroes are still people and that attractions can still grow between surprising figures. Their previously established connection gives them plenty of history to fall back on, and both of them clearly enjoy the other's company.

Manifold has actually gained something of a consistent friendship and allyship with Black Panther -- the two worked together in the build-up to the Incursions, and it was Manifold's final sacrifice as the universe around them ended that helped save the figures who would go on to help restart the entire multiverse. Since then, Manifold has fought alongside T'Challa in the overarching Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda storyline (after briefly being turned villainous), and was instrumental in the restoration of T'Challa's sister Shuri -- the Djalia and helping bring her soul back to the material world. It also seems that the teleporting mutant has also had something of an impression on Shuri as well.

It would be an exciting development for either of them to get a love interest. But this coupling comes with an additional element to it. Wakanda and Krakoa, while not enemies have not been as close as they could be. Wakanda has repeatedly refused any aid or gifts from Krakoa, arguing they already have plenty of resources. Storm, a prominent mutant, was once the Queen of Wakanda due to her marriage to T'Challa. But following their separation (and especially in light of Storm stealing an ancestral blade from Wakanda for her part in X of Swords), relations between the nations reached a new low. But T'Challa and Storm have been increasingly seen together and apparently at peace -- and having another prominent mutant fall in love with a member of the Wakandan royal family could further heal the rift between the nations.
