Mystique is the ultimate chameleon in Marvel Comics, able to completely change her identity into anybody she observes. That involves a lot of costume changes as well. Though Raven Darkholme's core look is pretty consistent through comics, animated series, and feature films, she's also worn some wildly different looks over the years. This classic villain of the X-Men (and sometimes member) changes things up a lot.

Given her shapeshifting ability, which allows her to mimic clothes, too, there are more costumes than fans can even account for. That said, here is every Mystique costume, ranked.

10 Weapon X

Mystique Weapon X

As a member of the reformed Weapon X crew back in 2018, Mystique wore a variation of her classic costume. She wore a white bodysuit and long skirt slit to the waist on each side, held by laces on each side, with long gloves that extended almost to the elbow. Instead of her typical white, she chose orange, in keeping with the team's basic color scheme. Contrasted with her naturally blue skin, it made for a really great color combination that always existed with her red hair. This costume didn't last long, but it was a winner.

9 X-Men Forever

In 2009, legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont returned to the franchise he helped turn into one of the biggest in comics. He picked up where he left off in 1991, in an alternate reality. Some circumstances changed, and so did costumes. Mystique got a new costume that for the first time was a full bodysuit. It kept the traditional black and white color scheme but was much more sleek and refined. The white chevron extended to her waist and across her shoulders, giving the hint of her original look.

8 Uncanny X-Men (Chris Bachalo)

During the Uncanny X-Men in the mid-2010s, Mystique got a bit of a makeover from artist Chris Bachalo. She maintained her traditional costume but added a scarf to the top of the tunic which created a nice, new play on the original. This version also added some seam lines, indicating a concession to practical reality which most comic book costumes have acknowledged since the advent of the MCU. It will be interesting to see how future X-Men films interpret the character, who was a major element of the Fox films.

7 Age Of Apocalypse

Everybody in the X-Men universe got a major makeover for the Age of Apocalypse event, and Mystique was no exception. Her costume changed dramatically in this dystopic alternate future. Instead of black and white, she chose black and red, with the red mostly in her collar and belt straps.

She ditched her traditional jumpsuit and skirt for a full bodysuit with a jacket, though she kept her signature skull pendant headband, which is a feature of most of her costumes.

6 X-Men: Apocalypse

Mystique X-Men Apocalypse

Mystique has appeared in all of the X-Men movies so far and became a major player in the First Class era of the franchise when her backstory was retconned dramatically to become a childhood friend of Professor X. Her basic look is iconic (more on that later), but one of her best costumes barely got any play at all. At the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, Mystique begins training a new class of X-Men. She wears a new costume that features her classic white, blue, and black colors, but it's only shown in this one brief scene.

5 House of M

Mystique House of M

Mystique got a new costume in the alternate reality presented in House of M. She's an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of its elite strikeforce, Red Guard. Raven wears their standard costume, which actually echoes the silhouette of her original pretty closely. The militaristic black and white uniform relies on a paneling design in the chest and legs that essentially recreates the outline of her original look. She also wears the standard gold cuffs and shoulder pads that the rest of her squad does.

4 X-Men: Evolution

Mystique X-Men Evolution

Mystique appeared in the underappreciated the mid-2000s animated series X-Men: Evolution. She wore a variation of her classic costume, with some key differences. This iteration is much more angular in design that her comic book one, and that extends to her hair. Her hair in the comics is generally pretty loose, but this version gives her a severe almost-helmet like a cut that may have been echoing the slicked-back movie look. Her belt of skulls changed, too. Instead of a band of several tiny skulls, there are just a few, evenly spaced along her waist.

3 Black Costume

In the 2000s, Mystique's look changed with her circumstances. She began working as a secret agent of Professor X and ditched the classic white look. Instead, she went with all black. This costume featured a black halter top that left her with a bare midriff, along with black leather pants and black combat boots.

She kept wearing her skull-pendant, though it didn't appear to be connected to any kind of headband. Since all her clothes are generated by her power, none was necessary (in fact no fashion concessions like buttons are).

2 Original Movie

Mystique X-Men 2

Mystique debuted in the original X-Men movie in 2000 with a radically different look. The movie took the concept that she generated all her clothes from her skin and left her basically nude when she wasn't impersonating anyone (like Wolverine). The look was definitely different and iconic from anything she ever wore in the comics. Another major addition was the introduction of scales on her skin, which seemed to fold back as she transformed into someone else. Her 'default' look lasted throughout the entire Fox X-Men franchise.

1 Classic

Mystique's original costume, designed by Dave Cockrum, was an instant classic. The white bodysuit worked perfectly with her blue skin and red hair. Early versions included a belt of golden skulls, which were essentially pouches. They often contained small weapons and other devices (fans might have wondered where these items went when Mystique - and her belt - transformed). This look remains in place more or less in the Dawn of X era and has become her signature look for decades.
