In every installment of Abandoned Love we will be examining comic book stories, plots and ideas that were abandoned by a later writer without actively retconning away the previous story. Feel free to e-mail me at brianc@cbr.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Reader Skip N. wrote in to ask:

Not sure if this has been asked, but when was the last time that Angel was identified as a Multi-Millionaire....Most people know he inherited the money from his family back in Champions #8 or #9, in the 70's but I don't think he still identifies as a money guy....Perhaps i'm wrong as I don't read X-Men anymore.

The history of Warren Worthington III and his fortune has definitely been an interesting one! Let's take a look!

When we first met the X-Men in X-Men #1 (by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman), there is no blatant evidence that Warren Worthington III is rich except, well, the fact that Stan Lee named him "Warren Worthington the Third"...

It's just unlikely that he would have given him such a "rich" sounding if that wasn't his intent.

Even the next issue, Warren has a nice car, so he's PROBABLY rich, but it's not blatant...

But then, in X-Men #5, Warren refers to himself as "blue blooded," which specifically means that he is rich...

So Warren is then rich for the rest of his initial time with the X-Men. Then, in a solo story that was in a few different books, Warren's uncle murdered Warren's father in an attempt to take over the Worthington fortune. Warren stopped him.

In Champions #1 (by Tony Isabella, Don Heck and Mike Esposito), Warren is visiting Bobby Drake when they are attacked and Warren decides to go into action as the Angel WITHOUT his face mask, thus revealing his identity to the world...

Four issues later, in Champions #5 (by Isabella, Heck and John Tartaglione), we see that Warren's relatives (who? I have no idea) are contesting his family's will now that Warren has been publicly identified as a mutant. They lost and thus, Warren inherits the Worthington fortune...

Okay, so years later, he uses his money to fund X-Factor. During a battle, though, his wings are badly damaged. In X-Factor #14 (by Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson and Bob Wiacek), Warren is declared incompetent and his damaged wings are removed...

This drives Warren to suicide in the next issue....

He survives, of course, but everyone thinks that he is dead. In X-Factor #21, we learn that Cameron Hodge (who is evil, of course) has manipulated Warren to make him leave his fortune to Hodge, as official head of X-Factor...

Warren, naturally, turns out to be alive. Apocalypse turns him into Archangel with new metal wings...

Eventually, Warren breaks Apocalypse's control and re-joins his friends in X-Factor.

Eventually, in X-Factor #59 (by Louise Simonson, Terry Shoemaker and Al Milgrom), the media tries to figure out if Archangel is really Warren Worthington...

At the end of the issue, he comes forward and reveals that he is, indeed, alive (and blue)...

Cameron Hodge dies soon after this, so presumably Warren got his fortune back. It's not clear, though.

He rejoins the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #281...

But he doesn't talk about his money. Just a lot of "Am I Warren Worthington still?", like this bit in Uncanny X-Men #292...

The next issue, Jean Grey finally helps Warren get his head out of his backside and get over the whole "Am I man or am I a muppet?"...

the next issue, he takes his girlfriend out on a date and it is clear that he does have money again....

That is quite the journey.

Thanks for the question, Skip!
