The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #31 from Marvel Comics.
Shortly after being stabbed in the head by Logan, Beast/Hank McCoy's body transforms into a horrific, fungus-infected creature resembling The Last of Us' clickers in Marvel's Wolverine #31.
Wolverine #31 comes from writer Benjamin Percy, artist Juan José Ryp, color artist Frank D'Armata and letterer VC's Cory Petit. In recent issues of Wolverine and X-Force, Beast has secretly become one of Krakoa's most dangerous villains as he killed Logan and then interrupted his resurrection process so he could use the X-Man as his own, personal assassin. Logan was eventually able to fully resurrect and regained his memory before he then stabbed Beast in the head in Wolverine #30.
Logan is standing over Beast's body in Wolverine #31 when it suddenly begins twitching and splitting apart. Unexpectedly, Beast's head burst open and is replaced by a patch of horrific plants and mushrooms, making the character resemble one of the fungus-infected clickers in both The Last of Us television series on HBO and the video game developed by Naughty Dog. Wolverine explains that Beast was likely experimenting with Krakoan biotech and booby-trapped his own body in case something were to ever happen to him. Logan proceeds to fight this new, zombie-like version of Beast before he ultimately cuts the creature's head off.
Wolverine Hasn't Seen the Last of Hank McCoy
While the fungus-infected version of Beast may be permanently deceased, Logan's interactions with Hank are far from over. Wolverine #31 reveals not only is Beast is still very much alive in a different, resurrected body, but there are now multiple versions of him. After taking his leave from Krakoa, Beast awakens a number of his clones and promptly tells them all it's time to get to work. The end of the issue further reveals that Beast is also making a number of Wolverine clones he'll likely use for sinister purposes that he calls his "Weapons of X."
The story continues in Wolverine #32, which will place Logan in the middle of his own clone saga. The synopsis for the issue, which releases April 5, 2023, reads, "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! WOLVERINE may be the best there is at what he does…but which Wolverine is the best? BEAST'S last-ditch effort to save mutantdom involves a veritable CLONE SAGA for LOGAN! Which Wolverine will be left standing?"
