Fox Has 'No Plans' for X-Files Season 12

Fox has confirmed there are no plans for any additional seasons of The X-Files, which was revived on the network in 2016.

While the truth is still out there, The X-Files is being shut down once again.

Fox network CEO Gary Newman confirmed in a conference call with reporters that "there are no plans to do another season at the moment," which means the recently concluded 11th season of the cult drama will likely be its last.

The announcement comes months after comments from series creator Chris Carter that he had no intention of continuing the sci-fi drama without star Gillian Anderson. Shortly before the Season 11 premiere, Anderson said she wouldn't return to her role as FBI agent Dana Scully, which catapulted her to stardom in the 1990s.

“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me,” Anderson said in January. “I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement, because my understanding was that this was a single season.”

Originally airing on Fox from 1993 to 2002, The X-Files was famously revived in 2016 for a 10th season, which premiered to 13.5 million viewers. However, the Season 11 premiere was watched in January by only 5.2 million viewers.

While The X-Files has consistently been a franchise of surprises returns and resurrections, fans may have to keep their hopes in check for more stories of Mulder and Scully.
