As part of its New York Comic Con presentation, Fox has unveiled a downright apocalyptic trailer for the 11th season of The X-Files.

Boasting a heady mix of mystery, mythology and humor -- at least some of that courtesy of the Cigarette Smoking Man -- the footage is sure to please fans of the drama. But of course it arrives even as series star Gillian Anderson revealed that this season will be her last as Dana Scully.

The trailer positions humanity on the brink of destruction, with the Cigarette Smoking Man apparently eager to push it along that path. "I'm here to offer you a deal," he tells Walter Skinner. "Civilization is in its final stages. I'm asking you to portray the whole human race. You mind if I smoke?"

What that scheme entails isn't exactly clear (because it's The X-Files, of course), but Fox Mulder and Dana Scully's son apparently has a role to play in saving the human race. "He's a very special child," a sinister man tells and angry Mulder. How exactly William fits into the puzzle remains to be seen.

Arriving in 2018, the 10-episode 11th season of The X-Files reunites creator Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi, plus William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell.
