The covers of Marvel's upcoming X-Men epic X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine may have revealed the threat behind Wolverine's time-traveling mission.

In the dual five-issue miniseries X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine, Logan travels through his own timeline to find answers about his past that have the potential to change the future of the X-Men. Though the book has yet to reveal the culprit behind Wolverine's journey, the covers for the first two issues of X Deaths of Wolverine may have already revealed the answer. These images, by Andy Kubert and Dan Jurgens, show Wolverine covered in a technological grid that is eerily reminiscent of the Transmode virus, a weapon used by the Technarchy. The other covers are drawn by artists Mahmud Asrar and Sam Keith.

The Transmode virus first appeared in the pages of Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz's run on New Mutants alongside the character of Warlock. Upon contact, it can potentially turn any life into a techno-organic creature. In certain cases, the virus can also turn its victims into a dangerous lifeform known as a Phalanx, who have plagued everybody from the X-Men to the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Phalanx were also featured in the dark future of Jonathan Hickman's Powers of X, adding further credibility to this theory.

Starting in January, X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will come out on alternating weeks and have intertwining narratives that fit into one larger whole. Both books will be written by Benjamin Percy, with art by Joshua Cassara in X Lives of Wolverine and art by Federico Vicenti in X Deaths of Wolverine. The story follows Wolverine as he travels through time on a mission to prevent the death of a key figure in mutant history. Marvel promises that these two titles will have a major impact on the X-Men moving forward, ushering in the Second Krakoan Age of X-Men. The first age of X-Men began with Hickman's House of X and Powers of X titles.

At the same time, Orchis stands on the verge of discovering the secret behind the X-Men's resurrection protocols, threatening their cycle of rebirth.

X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine launch in January 2022.
