Producer and screenwriter Craig Kyle, who introduced X-23 in 2003 on the animated X-Men: Evolution, made the announcement Tuesday night with a retweet of the script news. "I’ve been sitting on this news for months!" he wrote. "One of the biggest secrets I’ve ever kept."

The Hollywood Reporter then updated its original article on the team behind Logan to note that Kyle is collaborating with Mangold on the story treatment.

Played by 12-year-old Dafne Keen, the ferocious Laura Kinney (aka X-23) became the breakout star of the critically acclaimed Logan, leading to speculation about a spinoff virtually from the moment the film debuted in March. Although at the time Mangold seemed reluctant to consider such a project, insisting it's important to focus on one film at a time, he's clearly now hoping the success of Wonder Woman will help pave the way for an X-23 feature.

Kyle, on the other hand, never had such qualms, and in March offered up his own ideas for a solo outing: "A story I always wanted to tell was, once she’s free and once she’s gone through what she’s gone through, the only way she can have a hope for a future is for her to go back and trace the lives that remained and were harmed by the actions she was forced to commit. You put her on this journey of redemption. She faces the families that lost fathers. The orphans, everyone that was touched by her horrific acts."

Kyle's credits include co-writing Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, which opens Nov. 3 nationwide.
