Syfy's Wynonna Earp is known for its titular heroine wielding a supernatural revolver, known as Peacemaker, that usually turns a yellow-orange color just as she shoots revenants to send them back to Hell. However, on three occasions, Peacemaker has glowed blue when it was being fired.

Fans have speculated several theories as to why the color change occurs. Even actor Tim Rozon, who plays Doc Holiday on the show, put forth a convincing theory. To figure out why Peacemaker turns blue, it's imperative to look at who was being shot at and why, since the gun seems to have its own rules of play.

The first time Peacemaker turned blue was in the Season 1 finale when Wynonna shot her sister, Willa, in a mercy kill. Willa was about to be horribly torn apart by a giant tentacled monster, and Wynonna shot her to avoid causing more undue suffering. Although Willa was acting as an enemy to Wynonna, trying to set the demons free of the Ghost River Triangle, deep down she was still a good person who was led astray. This was a hard kill for Wynonna, who asked her sister to make her peace before she shot her.

The second time Peacemaker turned blue was in the Season 2 finale, when Waverly tries to shoot morally-ambiguous revenant Rosita after learning that she plans on stealing Wynonna's baby for safe passage out of the Ghost River Triangle. Wynonna has to verbally abuse Peacemaker to get the gun to work for Waverly since she is not the heir, which also suggests that the gun is sentient in some capacity and can have its own rules about how and when it shoots.

The last time Peacemaker turned blue was in Season 3, Episode 8, when Wynonna mercy kills the Stone Witch, Constance Clootie, who kneels before the barrel of the gun wanting to be put out of her misery. Clootie was reduced to a charred puppet being used to do Bulshar's bidding, and not wanting to spend her immortality a slave, she chose the release of death. In a close up of the barrel, the gun starts to glow orange but quickly turns to a cool blue.

The most popular theory as to why Peacemaker turns blue is that it symbolizes the shooter feels empathy for their target. Wynonna certainly felt empathy for her sister, wanting to spare her pain; Waverly still had some tender feelings for Rosita; and Wynonna felt bad for Clootie being a slave to Bulshar. This also shares some similarities with another fan theory that Peacemaker turning blue signifies that the target still has a good heart and will be sent to Heaven instead of Hell. Willa, Rosita and Clootie each were good at one point and were tempted to do evil things, but could have repented their sins in their heart when faced with Peacemaker's judgement.

Tim Rozon's theory seems to hold the most merit, as he states that Peacemaker turning blue is the gun's way of telling the shooter there is a better way to solve this problem than with a bullet. Peacemaker was designed for a specific purpose: to send revenants back to Hell, according to the Earp curse. Shooting Willa, Rosita and Constance was not a necessary part of the gun's mission statement. Peacemaker has very finicky rules about when it will work and doesn't have any hesitation communicating its conditions to Wynonna.

Creator Emily Andras has not given a reason for why Peacemaker turns blue, other than that there is definitely significance behind when it changes color. All of these theories have the idea in common that the times Peacemaker turned blue were clearly different than any other time Wynonna put down just another evil revenant. It is likely that the color has something to do with the way the shooter feels about the target or if the target really deserves to be shot in the first place. Wynonna has an emotional attachment to Peacemaker, strengthening the argument that the feelings surrounding the shooting will affect the gun's performance.

Peacemaker has turned blue once in each of the previous seasons, making it likely to do so once more in Season 4. The last color change might bring with it an explanation, since Wynonna Earp is slated to end its run on Syfy after this season's finale come spring.

Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday. The second half of Season 4 premieres March 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
