Although Wynonna Earp will no longer have a home at Syfy after its current Season 4, it might not be the end for the "demon-hunting cowgirl" show, according to its boss.

After news broke that the southwestern town of Purgatory is slated to close its doors after Season 4, showrunner Emily Andras stated she was "shocked" to THR. However, Andras added that she remains "hopeful" about finding a home for the show's fifth season.

While Andras remained coy about what network or streaming services are interested in picking up the series for its planned Season 5, she stated that the team has been in ongoing meetings and are "ranking [their] targets of opportunity."

Wynonna Earp was initially greenlit for a fifth season in July 2019, after surviving a lengthy Season 4 delay due to funding issues from IDW Entertainment. Andras shared how production was affected by its financial troubles, adding, "We filmed about half of our Season [4] and then on March 1, this pandemic showed up. So, we shut down again until August." The showrunner added, "We managed to film the back half of season four. But by that point, we had basically spent two and a half years on season four, which was hard."

For fans wondering what this all might mean for the series, Andras described the show's possible Season 5 state as being less of a challenge than solving Season 4's funding issues. Andras stated, "I would also say that in a weird way, while it may look more dire to the public, I think that Season 5 is almost easier than Season 4 because [Canadian distributor] Space stepped up in Season 4 financially."

The showrunner added, "All we need is a U.S. broadcaster, which is not as much moving around the chess pieces as it even was in Season 4. All the big people are in play, from IMDbTV to Paramount+, Hulu. Name a streamer, they have gotten a call from us."

When asked how hard it's been to find a new home for the series, given that its streaming rights are held already by Netflix, she replied, "My feeling is, if you are the savior of Wynonna Earp, it's such a great story and you will have this built-in audience that you're bringing to your service. We're working to convince people of that."

Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday. The second half of Season 4 premieres March 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
