After two years off the air, the fan-favorite western horror series Wynonna Earp is finally back for a fourth season of new adventures on Syfy. Picking up from the third season's cliffhanger ending, the new season resumes like no time has passed at all. The series is just as fun and accessible as always, with plenty of kinetic action sequences and its signature wry sense of humor, which provides a much-needed escape for fans and a showcase for its ensemble cast led by star Melanie Scrofano.

The vampiric Doc Holliday sets out to rescue Wynonna's sister Waverly, who was trapped in an alternate dimension at the end of Season 3, and bring her back to the real world. Meanwhile, in the small Western town of Purgatory, Wynonna continues to deal with her family curse, now without her trusty, mythical revolver Peacemaker, as she and Waverly's longtime girlfriend Nicole investigate the latest supernatural threats that have arisen to menace the town's denizens.

As always, despite the ever-present high stakes, Wynonna Earp's sly wit permeates the Season 4 premiere, enabling the show to maintain a sense of awareness and poke fun at any perceived self-importance and common genre tropes without outright breaching the fourth wall. This is buoyed by the always entertaining main cast, now four seasons into their working relationship and playing off of each other with relative ease and natural chemistry. The threats in the story are hellishly important and blood still runs aplenty in the premiere episode, but there is always that wink to the audience at the same time as the characters are grounded in genuine emotion.

The action and visual effects remain as strong as ever, from the surreal dimension that Waverly and Doc discover themselves in to a nefarious new threat confronted by Wynonna and Nicole that threatens to engulf the entire town. While Wynonna may not have her trusty Peacemaker anymore, the character is still every inch the badass she always was as she and Nicole take on a grisly wave of opponents. However, the violence is never graphic to the point of becoming overly unpleasant or unsavory.

And despite the show's ever-expanding mythology, the premiere remains refreshingly accessible. It rewards longtime fans, but new viewers will not necessarily be lost as they are introduced to Purgatory and its characters, largely due to how inviting the actors' performances are.

Four seasons on, Wynonna Earp remains just as strong and entertaining as ever, and its cast is clearly having a good time coming back to the series. This sense of joy and camaraderie carries over to the characters and story they find themselves drawn into between cracking jokes and hunting monsters. The Season 4 premiere feels like a natural continuation, and even after a two-year gap between seasons the show doesn't miss a single beat.

For the Earpers that campaigned for the show's salvation and renewal, there are plenty of crowd-pleasing moments in the season premiere alone to put a smile on their faces as Wynonna and her posse saddle up for new adventures while attending to unfinished business. Anyone looking for a fun escape with loads of action, may find no consistently better choice.

Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday. Season 4 premieres July 26 at 10pm ET/PT on Syfy.
