WWLA: Marvel Comics’ “Mondo Marvel” Panel Report

CBR News was in attendance for Marvel Comics’ first panel at this year’s Wizard World L.A., where moderator Jim McCann, along with panelists Brett Both, Tom Brevoort, Mark Paniccia, Christos Gage, C.B. Cebulski and Paul Jenkins talked about all things Marvel, with an emphasis on the upcoming “World War Hulk.”

The presentation opened with the standard slide show, and the first project up was “Annihilation: Conquest,” which, in addition to the six-issue mini serie being published from November ’07 through April ’08, will have four tie-in minis featuring Wraith, Quasar, Nova and Starlord respectively. Gage, who is writing the “Quasar” mini described it as “Joan of Ark in space” and was proud to announce that Super Adaptoid would be the villain.

Next up was “Mystic Arcana,” which, according to Panaccia is going to “define magic in the Marvel universe,” and will focus on Black Knight, Scarlett Witch, “Runaways'” Sister Grimm and Magik.

McCann showed slides for “New Avengers/Transformers” and the “Halo” graphic novel, before making the panel’s first announcement: a new series called “Avengers Classic,” which Brevoort described as the “Avengers equivalent to the ’80s ‘X-men Classic.'” Each issue will reprint a classic Avengers story and have at least one new story set in the Avengers’ past.

The next announcement was “Daredevil: Battling Jack Murdock,” which will be written by Zeb Wells and penciled by Carmine DiGiandomenico. Check out our interview with Editor Warren Simons about the project.

Next, C.B. Cebulski spoke to the “Runaways” spinoff “Loners,” which he is writing. Cebulski described it as “an ensemble team drama book” that was like “alcoholics anonymous for superheroes.” Karl Moline will be lending his penciling talents to the series. Each of the six covers was inspired by a John Hughes film.

McCann also announced that novelist Laurell K. Hamiliton will be writing an original story for an upcoming comic, “Anita Blake Vampire Hunter: The First Death,” with art by Joe Phillips and covers by Brett Booth. The book features Anita’s first meeting with Edward, Jean Claude, and her first collaboration with the police.

Next up was “Spider-Man/Red Sonja,” which according to Brevoort was inspired by those characters’ team-up in an old issue of “Marvel Teamup.” By Michael Avon Oeming and Mel Rubi, with covers by Michael Turner.

The panel moved on to “World War Hulk.” Paniccia described the “World War Hulk: Prologue” as a “great jumping on point,” which shows “two different perspectives on the relationship between the Hulk and the Illuminati.” The first of five issue of “Word War Hulk” is due out in July, by Greg Pak, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson. Paniccia also said, “In ‘World War Hulk,’ Hulk is the strongest he’s ever been.”

Gage talked about his tie-in, “World War Hulk: X-men.” “Imagine three issues of the Hulk fighting all the X-men.” Although, there were a select few mutants who will be indisposed, including Juggernaut. Fans and Gage both wanted the opportunity to see the Hulk face off against the unstoppable Juggernaut, but the logistics of getting him from England to the Westchester, New York in time proved daunting. The general consensus for a solution was “Shi’ar technology.” “I actually used Shi’ar technology to get from England myself,” Jenkins said. Brevoort suggested that the Juggernaut send an angry e-mail.

Paul Jenkins perked up when he heard, apparently for the first time, that his character General Ryker would play an important role in “World War Hulk: Gamma Corps” by Frank Tieri and Carlos Ferreria. “I’m glad you’re using him finally,” the writer said. The panel also said that the DNA of Hulk villains Abomination and the Leader would play a part in this series.

Jenkins spoke about his contribution to the event, “World War Hulk: Frontline,” which boasts pencils by Ramon Bachs. “I get Hulk versus all the canon fodder characters in the Marvel universe,” Jenkins said. Jenkins explained that Marvel has a long list of all of the Marvel characters are officially considered canon-fodder, including Typeface (who Jenkins offed in “Civil War: Frontline”). “I thought I’d be on the Colbert show, but I wasn’t,” Jenkins quipped. “Dead means dead in comics,” Jenkins asserted.

As opposed to “Civil War: Frontline,” “World War Hulk: Frontline” will be in 22-page format, and each issue will have three parts: The Ben Urich and Sally Floyd story, a story following Sally’s boyfriend Danny Granville of the Costume Division, and two-page humor backup stories, the first of which answers the question “What will the Rhode Island Initiative look like?” And even though it wasn’t in his original pitch, Jenkins feels obligated to write a confrontation between the Hulk and the Thing since said fight was drawn on the cover to issue 3. And Jenkins confirmed that if “World War Hulk: Frontline” is successful, he will continue to write Frontline tie-ins to future Marvel events.

Issues 4 and 5 of “Avengers: The Initiative” tie-in to “World War Hulk,” which Brevoort described as the “baptism of fire” for the newly recruited members of the Initiative. “The Hulk’s arrival on Earth is the Initiative’s first major engagement,” Brevoort said.

In the one issue of “Irredeemable Ant Man,” the titular character will take advantage of the carnage to loot and plunder.

Paniccia described the Ghost Rider tie-in as simply “the Hulk vs. the spirit of vengeance. What more can I say?”

Other tie-ins include “Incredible Hulk” 106-109, “Iron Man” 19-20, an issue of “Heroes for Hire,” and a “World War Hulk: Young Avengers” one-shot by Jeph Loeb and David Finch.

At this point McCann opened it up to questions from the audience.

One fan asked if Jenkins would make Iron Man cry again. “People didn’t like it, so I said it was Joe Quesada’s idea,” Jenkins said. “We’ve got a mini series planned, “Marvel’s Crying Game.'”

When the panel was asked how the Hulk would react to news of Captain America’s death, Tom Brevoort said, “He cries.” In all seriousness, Paniccia assured readers that it would be addressed.

The panel would not reveal whether Thor would be making an appearance in “World War Hulk,” but Sentry will definitely be around. “And he’s not written by Paul, so he’ll actually do things,” Brevoort joked at Jenkins’ expense.

According to McCann, during “World War Hulk,” Punisher will “shoot people.”

And “Incredible Hulk” writer Greg Pak, who couldn’t make the panel, sent thanks via Paniccia for all the fans’ support. We’ve also got some early June solicits and their covers, courtesy of Marvel.
