After successfully defending their WWE women's tag team titles against the Kabuki Warriors in a WrestleMania rematch, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross were given a challenge from a new team: Carmella and Dana Brooke. Bliss and Cross accepted the backstage challenge immediately, and will give Carmella and Dana a future title shot at a time and place yet to be determined.

At first glance, the pairing of Carmella and Dana Brooke would appear to be a pretty random one. The two have no built-in storyline to explain why they would be teaming up, other than having briefly tagged together in the past in the lead-up to Survivor Series, and seem to have been thrown together again simply because of a lack of other options to step up in the women's tag division.

But even if they were thrown together at random, Carmella and Dana actually make for a pretty promising duo that could have big potential to work as a team -- if WWE decides to book them well, of course.

Carmella has quietly become one of the workhorses of Smackdown's women's division since being split from R-Truth in October's Superstar Draft. As a past Smackdown Women's Champion, Money in the Bank winner, Women's Battle Royal winner, and two-time 24/7 Champion, she has the resume of a top-card performer in the women's division. She's proven herself to be strong on the mic, and her in-ring work has improved greatly from where it started off a few years ago.

Meanwhile, Dana Brooke has assumed the mantle of the under-used lower card performer who's shown flashes of their ability here and there but has never really gotten a sustained push before. She's reputed to be one of the hardest workers on the main roster in terms of putting in hours at the Performance Center to sharpen her in-ring skills -- and her work ethic seems to be paying off, both in terms of her recent in-ring performances and the amount of screen time she's received. After spending months barely being seen on Smackdown, she's started to get more opportunities since teaming with Carmella at Survivor Series, even getting a spot in Bayley's Six Pack Challenge match at WrestleMania before being pulled due to quarantine.

Heading into a title match against Bliss and Cross, Carmella and Dana Brooke actually greatly resemble their opponents when they first started tagging together. When they were first paired together, Alexa Bliss was a top-card former champion in the women's division in need of a new storyline, while Nikki Cross was a promising but underused talent struggling to get TV time on the main roster. Pairing the two together ended up being a huge success, and was an especially big boost for Nikki Cross's career that helped to establish her spot on the card. Teaming with Carmella could give a similar boost to Dana Brooke's career, while also giving Carmella the fresh storyline direction she's needed since failing to defeat Bayley for the Smackdown Women's Championship.

Knowing WWE, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that the partnership between Carmella and Dana gets dissolved after a week or two and never gets mentioned again afterwards. But if WWE can recognize the potential to turn the two into the next Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, it could develop a strong new team for the women's tag division -- and a potential new star in Dana Brooke.
