For the past few years, it's been WWE tradition for a few NXT superstars to be called up to either Raw or SmackDown after WrestleMania. This year, Raw acquired Bianca Belair, while SmackDown received three new competitors. On the April 10, 2020 edition of SmackDown, The Forgotten Sons made their debut. Wesley Blake, Steve Cutler and Jaxson Ryker have been making their presence known to an extent during their time in NXT. However, in recent memory, they fell by the wayside and became more or less -- well, forgotten, so to speak.
They got their start on SmackDown in a surprising manner. Cutler and Blake scored an easy victory over Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik of the Lucha House Party, an established group in their own right. After winning the debut match in such a dominant fashion, they could be on the right track to move on up the ladder and challenge for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
The blue brand has other capable tag teams as well, so it's still possible for The Forgotten Sons to get lost in the shuffle. But, a change of scenery could help them find their place after getting a little lost on NXT. Of course, there's the other big trio on SmackDown, The New Day, who are currently without Xavier Woods, but that hasn't hindered their ability. The Usos are another one of the brand's top tag teams. They returned to action only a couple months ago and they've already gained plenty of momentum. Then there's Heavy Machinery, and while Otis may have his hands full with Mandy Rose and Dolph Ziggler at the moment, he and Tucker are still a force to be reckoned with. Finally, there's the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions, John Morrison and The Miz. While the way they have been booked over the past couple months has been questionable at times, they still remain at the top of the SmackDown tag team food chain.
While SmackDown already has a trio in The New Day, they only have one big and powerful member in Big E. All three members of The Forgotten Sons are fairly big men and they're all heavy hitters. The only team that could rival them in that department is Heavy Machinery. But, having three members could give the Forgotten Sons the advantage over Tucker and Otis, or any team that fails to match their size.
That's the strategy The Forgotten Sons should use to work their way to the top. They need to utilize all three members to their fullest potential -- that's how The New Day became as successful as they are. Granted, The Forgotten Sons aren't as charismatic and their merchandise isn't exactly flying off the shelves, but that doesn't take away from the group's potential. Blake is a former NXT Tag Team Champion and Ryker is a former Tag Team Champion in his own right back from his stint in TNA. What they lack in charisma, they more than make up for in unity and brute force. If they can utilize that to their advantage, they will have no problem working their way up the ladder and challenging for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
This could happen in a matter of weeks. Miz and Morrison will need new challengers soon, whether it be at Money in the Bank or an episode of SmackDown in the near future. If The Forgotten Sons are able to rack up a few more wins between now and then, they should have no problem becoming the number one contenders and taking the top spot of the SmackDown tag team division.
