WWE's historic NXT TakeOver: XXV pits NXT Champion Johnny Gargano against Adam Cole, in a rematch of their bout at NXT TakeOver: New York. Gargano is well known for sporting ring gear inspired by comic book superheroes, and he kept that streak alive Saturday night by unveiling gear inspired by Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel.
Gargano's ring gear was covered in Captain Marvel's signature red, blue and gold colors. As an added bonus, the Hala symbol typically featured on her shirt also carried the NXT symbol.
The official WWE Twitter account posted an image of Gargano before entering the ring, with the caption, "Oh Captain, my captain. #NXTTakeOver #JohnnyTakeOver @JohnnyGargano." The Johnny Gargano Source Twitter account also shared four photos of Gargano before the match started.
Captain Marvel originally began with Carol Danvers wearing her standard-issued green Kree uniform. However, after she regained her memories, her best friend's daughter, Monica Rambeau, helped Carol alter the colors to something more original. Comic book artist Jamie McKelvie designed Captain Marvel's new look for a relaunch of her solo series back in 2012.
Some of the previous comic-inspired ring gear worn by Gargano include Iron Man, Venom and Dark Phoenix.
