One of the biggest criticisms fans have had with the WWE is its poor handling of tag teams on the main roster. Many believe the company has no plan for teams coming up from NXT, as seen with the exits of the likes of the Ascension and, most recently, the Revival. While others believe teams such as the now-released O.C. are simply signed to prevent rival promotions from getting them without any sort of long-term storyline.

Whatever the reason, the cracks are showing over on SmackDown because there's a New Day addiction there that's destroying the brand's tag team division thanks to repetitiveness.

Since July 2017, the New Day has copped the tag titles six times, most recently with Big E winning it from The Miz in a triple threat fight with Jey Uso. Under the Freebird rule, he's selected Kofi Kingston as his fellow champ as Xavier Woods is out injured. Now, while we love their comedic style, it's way overdone, and seeing another combination from the trio as titleholders is so stale now.

It's pure saturation, and if Vince McMahon's creative team keeps up with this fatigue, there's the risk fans will turn on them once the coronavirus pandemic ends. Seriously, it's a lack of creativity to keep giving them the belts. They don't need it all the time as they're a big brand themselves, helped by Kofi Kingston recently holding the WWE Championship for a short period. There's no reason the New Day can't stand on their own legs without the belts.

What makes it worse is that John Morrison and The Miz are perfect heels to keep the belts on and build momentum. But even if they are to be stripped, new faces need to hold the titles to create competition. Apart from the New Day, The Usos are overdone, so one has to ask what the plan for the division is. We're not seeing growth, and that makes you wonder why Triple H had to once more place Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa in a feud when he could have promoted them to freshen the scene. As it stands, it feels like right now everyone's jobbing to the New Day, and even if the belts go to someone else, as seen with the Bar or the Hardy Boyz in the last year, it's just placeholder.

You're expecting the New Day to figure in again, so there's no excitement or anticipation. It's not helped by a thin roster, as few prospects feel worthwhile. The division feels stymied and stagnant, so now is a good time to have a draft and shake things up. SmackDown needs quality tag teams, but that doesn't mean established ones. There's a chance for new blood to develop, which will help the company for future drafts as well. This can bring the tag team power back as WWE had in the '90s and 2000s. But as it stands, overbooking the same champs is counterintuitive. Much like fans have booed John Cena and Roman Reigns for being force-fed to them, creative is positioning the New Day to receive the same treatment if they persist with this one-dimensional formula for laughs.
